North Suburban YMCA Invites Community to Virtual 5K Quaruntine Challenge

As many events are being canceled due to coronavirus, the North Suburban YMCA is encouraging the community to stay active and get outside with a Quaruntine 5K fitness challenge. Open and free to the community, the Y has designed a complete 6 week in-home training program for beginning as well as advanced runners. Participants can complete their walk or run anytime on June 6.

"Whether it be on their own or with their families, the goal is keep our community members active and healthy," said Megan Vazquez, senior director of Wellness at the NSYMCA. Vazquez added that it's important to keep moving even during the Shelter At Home order.

To Join the North Suburban YMCA's Quaruntine 5K

1. Visit nsymca.org and look for the Quaruntine Virtual 5K Program.

2. Start "Day 1," "Week 1" of the program and follow the instructions for the remaining 6 weeks. Participants will find pre-recorded strength training videos and active recovery workouts such as stretching, yoga, and walking created by their favorite NSYMCA instructors.

3. On Saturday, June 6, participants can run/walk the 5K any time during the day. After completing the 5K, runners will upload a photo of themselves to Facebook and tag the North Suburban YMCA with the hashtag #NSYMCA5K and add their name and the time they completed the 5K.

"It's so important to remain physically active for your physical and mental health. It takes a toll on all of us to be stuck inside all day long," said Vazquez. The virtual run is open to all ages.
