After Hours Film Society to show Japanese drama 'Shoplifters' Jan. 28
The After Hours Film Society will show the 2018 drama "Shoplifters" from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Classic Cinemas Tivoli Theatre, 5021 Highland Ave. in Downers Grove. Tickets are $10 or $6 for film society members. The film, written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, is in Japanese with English subtitles.
After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu's wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them.
The film premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, where it went on to win the Palme d'Or. It won the Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Feature Film and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

On Monday, Feb. 4, the 2018 Danish thriller "The Guilty" will be shown at 7:30 p.m. The R-rated film, directed by Gustav Möller, features Jakob Cedergren, Jessica Dinnage and Omar Shargawi. The film had its world premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and winning the Audience Award.
Established in 1989, the After Hours Film Society screens foreign, classic and specialty films on the second and fourth Monday of the month at the historic 1928 Tivoli Theatre. Each presentation is followed by a group discussion led by educators and film professionals.
