Cleve Carney Art Gallery opens 2018-19 season with 'On Anxiety'

The Cleve Carney Art Gallery opens its 2018-19 season with "On Anxiety" starting Aug. 31 to Oct. 13, on the College of DuPage campus, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.

The exhibition of paintings, curated by Gwendolyn Zabicki, features work by Matthew Bollinger, Alexander Bradley Cohen, Jennifer Dierdorf, Ethan Gill, Justin John Greene, Mika Horibuchi, Hai-Hsin Huang, Ben Murray, Veronika Pausova, Celeste Rapone and Brandi Twilley.

"Some artists make funny paintings, some make sexy paintings, and others make serious paintings. This however, is a group show about anxious paintings. The artists in this exhibition are a selection of emerging artists working in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Canada," Zabicki said. "By any standards they are young, accomplished and remarkably skilled painters. Despite their success, they face familiar doubts and struggles and confront them through the act of painting.

"Their anxiety stems from issues related to health and well-being, financial and career decisions, and family and personal relationships. These artists may never attain a state of perfect calm and enlightenment -that is beside the point. If you, like them, feel intense anxiety it means you're on track to figuring out who you are. It is a task that may be endless but is still worth doing," Zabicki said.

Zabicki is a painter from Chicago. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005 and her Master's of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2012. She has curated exhibitions at Heaven Gallery and The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art. Her fall 2018 curatorial projects include "On Anxiety" at the Cleve Carney Art Gallery and an upcoming project at the Riverside Arts Center. Currently, she teaches painting and drawing at the Hyde Park Art Center.

There will be an opening reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8.

Other related special events include a "Curator Talk" at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, and an "Artist Talk," moderated by Scott Hunter, contemporary art and music advocate and pediatric neuropsychologist in clinical practice and on the faculty at the University of Chicago, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.

Admission to the exhibition and these events is free and open to the public.

"On Anxiety" may be viewed during regular gallery hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and one hour prior to McAninch Arts Center performances and during intermission.
