MCCD offers program on peregrine falcons

Once on the Endangered Species List and extirpated in Illinois from 1951 until 1986, the peregrine falcon population is now past historic levels.

The McHenry County Conservation District welcomes guest speaker Mary Hennen for a special presentation, "Illinois Peregrine Falcons: From Decline to Recovery," from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 19, at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road in Crystal Lake.

Hennen is director of the Chicago Peregrine Program, Bird Division of The Field Museum and author of "The Peregrine Returns" (University of Chicago Press).

As the majority of this recovered population is now found in an urban habitat, learn what it means to live in proximity to this remarkable bird. Hennen's presentation will include photos of some of the beautiful watercolors by Field Museum artist-in-residence Peggy Macnamara that appear as illustrations in Hennen's book. There may even be a visit from a live peregrine falcon, conditions permitting.

A book signing will follow the presentation.

Bring your own copy or purchase one on-site, made possible by Woodstock independent bookseller Read Between the Lynes.

The program is for adults and families.

Registration and fee are required by Tuesday, May 15.

The program is free for county residents and $5 for nonresidents. Use Code 5701 to register online at www.MCCDistrict.org; by phone for free programs only at (815) 479-5779; by mail-in and drop-off at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road in Crystal Lake; or drop-off only at Lost Valley Visitor Center, Route 31 and Harts Road in Ringwood.
