Classic Cinemas hosts monthly film clubs

• Charlestowne 18 Theatre, 3740 E. Main St. in St. Charles, offers special screenings on the first Wednesday of every month. There are film discussions led by Dave Gathman. It is sponsored by Vintage 53 in downtown St. Charles.
Join them for the First Wednesday Film Club presentation of the 2016 film "Frantz" at 1 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6. The PG-13 film is in French and German. It is directed by François Ozon, who also directed the 2003 film "Swimming Pool."
In the aftermath of World War I, a young German who grieves the death of her fiancé in France meets a mysterious Frenchman who visits the fiance's grave to lay flowers.
On Oct. 4, the film club will feature the 2016 comedy "The Women's Balcony" at 1 and 7 p.m. The film is in Hebrew. In this Israeli box office hit, a bar mitzvah mishap causes a major rift in a devout Orthodox community in Jerusalem.
• The Woodstock Theater, 209 Main St. in Woodstock, hosts a "Second Monday Film Club."
On Monday, Sept. 11, it will be a presentation of the 2016 film "A Quiet Passion" at 1 and 7 p.m. The film by director Terence Davies features Cynthia Nixon in the story of American poet Emily Dickinson from her early days as a young schoolgirl to her later years as a reclusive, unrecognized artist. The film also features Jennifer Ehle as the poet's younger sister, Vinnie Dickinson, and her father, Edward, played by Keith Carradine.
On Oct. 9, it will feature a presentation of the 2016 biographical romance "Maudie" at 1 and 7 p.m. starring Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke. This Irish-Canadian coproduction portrays Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis, an arthritic Nova Scotia woman who works as a housekeeper while she hones her skills as an artist and eventually becomes a beloved figure in the community.
