May 14: 2017 GED Graduation Ceremony at College of Lake County
The College of Lake County GED® graduation ceremony, which honors Lake County residents who have completed their high school equivalency exams, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 14 in the Physical Education Center at the Grayslake Campus.
"We are excited to bring back the GED ceremony, which was not held in 2015 and 2016 because there were not enough GED graduates," said Dr. Arlene Santos-George, dean of the Adult Basic Education, GED and ESL division. "Fewer students took the tests after major changes were made in 2014 to the GED test structure, content and delivery method. Now the test must be taken on a computer. Although the number of GED completers is still lower than pre-2014 years, we hope the event will be well attended and anticipated by the GED graduates from 2014 to 2017. It is a significant milestone in their lives."
The State of Illinois now accepts the TASC™ and HiSET® tests for obtaining a high school equivalency diploma. If you have passed your GED, HiSET or TASC exams, as well as the Constitution test and would like to participate in the ceremony, contact the Adult Basic Education, ESL and GED division at (847) 543-2275.
Armando Navarro of Round Lake obtained his GED in 2009. "Participating in the GED graduation ceremony was one of the proudest moments of my life. It was a significant accomplishment to share with my mother, who encouraged me to attend CLC after the graduation."
The ceremony is being organized by CLC's Adult Basic Education, GED and ESL division in conjunction with the Lake County Regional Office of Education. There is no cost for qualified graduates to participate. Caps and gowns are provided.
During the ceremony, students selected for the Distinguished GED Scholarship and the Libertyville Woman's Club Scholarship will receive their awards. These scholarships allow GED graduates to pursue a degree or certificate in a career program that leads to jobs with life-sustaining wages. Past recipients have pursued Cisco Networking, Mechatronics, General Office Assisting and HVAC Engineering Technology. Scholarship applications are currently being accepted.
