April 13-24: CLC celebrates Earth Week with free presentations and events

Find out what the College of Lake County is doing and what you can do at home to help make our world a little more sustainable during Earth Week events at CLC April 13-24. The activities are free and open to the public, and community members are invited to learn about topics ranging from green roofs to beekeeping to energy-saving tips.

Events are organized by the college's Facilities department and presented by CLC instructors and other experts. Activities will take place on the Grayslake Campus and last approximately one hour, unless otherwise noted. Common Break, Thursday, April 13, 10:30-11:30 a.m., Lakeshore Campus, 33 N. Genesee St., Waukegan. Husemoller will explain CLC's recycling guidelines and more.

Campus Clean-Up, Saturday, April 15, 10 a.m. to noon. Meet outside the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts. Wear work clothes and shoes, and bring work gloves.

Edible Landscapes, Monday, April 17, noon to 1 p.m., Room A011. Rory Klick, chair of CLC's horticulture department, will explain how a homeowner can incorporate food into home landscape in beautiful, practical ways - beyond the back of the lot.

Restoration Work, Monday, April 17, 1-3 p.m., H110 and outside. Help replace invasive, non-native plants with native species to improve water quality, reduce stormwater runoff, support beneficial wildlife and beautify the campus. Please wear work clothes, work shoes and gloves.

Get Smart! Smart Grid and Smart Metering, Tuesday, April 18, noon to 1 p.m., Student Commons. Learn how the Smart (power) Grid is creating new opportunities for career development. Explore the interactive, educational Smart Grid kiosk.

Grab a Green Giveaway, Tuesday, April 18, noon-1 p.m., Atrium, Southlake Campus, 1120 S. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills. Receive a useful giveaway and green tips. First come, first served while supplies last.

Green Roofs: Form and Function, Tuesday, April 18, 1-2 p.m., Southlake Campus Conference Center, Rooms V336-V340, 1120 S. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills. Jason Cashmore, biology instructor, will explain how green roofs are constructed and their benefits to both the building and the environment.

Residential Wildlife Habitat, Tuesday, April 18, noon to 1 p.m., Room A011 Auditorium. Kelly Cartwright, CLC biology professor, explains the benefits of ecofriendly gardening.

Reduce, Recycle and Compost, Wednesday, April 19, noon to 1 p.m., Room B257. David Husemoller, along with Sandra Emmerling, president of the CLC Environmental Club, will outline the college's waste-reduction efforts such as reusable containers, recycling and composting. Learn how you can compost at home.

Water Contamination, Wednesday, April 19, 1-2 p.m., Student Commons. Environmental Club members will explain how to safeguard against threats to local water supplies.

All about Bees, Wednesday, April 19, 2-3 p.m., H110 (Horticulture Building) and outside. Edward Popelka, CLC staff member and resident beekeeper, will discuss the role of bees as pollinators and threats they are experiencing. Includes a visit to CLC's apiary (bee colony).

The Water Warrior, Wednesday, April 19, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Room A011 Auditorium. Members of Native American tribes and other groups will provide an update of the Dakota Access Pipeline and other petroleum projects. Find out the local angle and learn about a Hainesville success story.

New Electronic Vehicle Car Charger and Nissan Leaf Test Drive, Thursday, April 20, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Parking Lot 7. Learn about CLC's new electric vehicle (EV) charger being installed in Lot 7. Test drive an all-electric Leaf, courtesy of a local Nissan dealer.

Lake County Green Conference, Thursday, April 20, 1-5 p.m., in the Lower Level A Wing Conference Center and Room A011 Auditorium. Local business, education, non-profit, municipal and county leaders, as well as students, will offer presentations on the role of schools in building a sustainable ethic and inspiring green career choices. Farm Market, Thursday, April 20, 3-5 p.m., Student Commons. Visit with CLC's local food coordinator and more than a dozen local food producers to purchase some of the first greens of the season. Sign up for the CLC Learning Farm's Community Sustained Agriculture (CSA) program and find out where to find locally grown produce and other foods.

Karaoke Sing for Sustainability, Thursday, April 20, 6-9 p.m., Room C106. Join CLC's Environmental Club, First Generation Club and Latino Alliance for a fun karaoke night.

Arbor Day Tree Planting, Friday, April 21, 11:30-12:30 p.m., Horticulture Building entrance. Help plant trees in the campus arboretum. Learn about CLC's 300-plus species of trees and shrubs and how CLC manages the collection. Wear work clothes and sturdy shoes.

5K Fun Run for the Earth, Friday, April 21, 1-2 p.m., Physical Education Center. This first annual event, sponsored by CLC's Social Action Club and the CLC Alumni Association, raises money for a charity of your choice. Cost is $5 for CLC students with a valid student ID and $15 for all others. Register at the race; check in at noon.
