State's attorney's office offers new support group

McHenry County State's Attorney Patrick D. Kenneally has announced the formation of a support group for those who have a lost a loved one to crime.

"Survivors of crime victims can never be fully recompensed for the cruel and senseless loss they have endured and many continue to struggle long after criminal proceedings have ended," said Kenneally. "We hope they can find some solace in sharing their experience with others and helping shoulder the burden together."

The group will be facilitated by Jen Ahrens, a retired police officer with 30 years experience in the field. Ahrens has worked with and helped hundreds of victims and their families throughout her career. She also is set to obtain her master's degree in clinical mental health counseling this March. The support group will be an opportunity to meet with other survivors who are experiencing similar trauma. The focus will be on the personal journey with grief in a safe and supportive environment.

The support group is free and open to anyone. It will meet the first and third Thursday of every month, starting April 6. The meetings will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Mental Health Board, 620 Dakota St., Crystal Lake.
