MCC continues Bioneers Series on environmental topics

McHenry County College continues the 2017 Great Lakes Bioneers Speaker Series featuring new perspectives on key environmental topics. The next two programs will be 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 21 and 28, in the college's Luecht Conference Center in Building B. Experts will share their views on resiliency, citizen science and environmental justice.

On Feb. 21, Tania M. Schusler, Ph.D. lecturer at the Loyola University Institute for Environmental Sustainability and coordinator of Solutions to Environmental Problems, will speak on "Engaging Citizens in Civic Ecology Practices." Throughout her career, she has worked at the interface of people and the environment. She teaches courses in environmental justice, human dimensions of conservation, food systems, and water. Her research focuses on citizen participation and stakeholder engagement in sustainable community development.

The series concludes Feb. 28 with "Building the Social Justice Narrative on our Environmental Crises," presented by Shalini Gupta, founder and executive director of the Center for Earth, Energy and Democracy. Her work is focused on forging solutions to our environmental crises that are grounded in economic and social history. She has worked with a range of organizations from local grassroots groups to international organizations engaging in the promotion of sound environmental policy and environmental justice and sustainable policies at the community level and across the country.

The speaker series is sponsored by the McHenry County College Sustainability Center and the Bioneers Steering Committee. Selected area organizations will be available, along with the speakers, for further discussion after the presentation.
