Assistance Available for Suburban Cook Co. Homeowners with Damage from 2013 Floods

In the spring of 2013, severe flooding topped a 70-year record in northern Illinois. As a result, countless suburban Cook County homes suffered extreme flood damage, which many homeowners are still dealing with today.

A new program called the Disaster Recovery Residential Resilience Program, is administered by Schaumburg-based non-profit, North West Housing Partnership (NWHP). The program provides homeowners in suburban Cook County who qualify, with a one-time grant to help cover the costs of flood remediation and mitigation.

Maria Rodriguez, a resident of Brookfield, learned about the program through Brookfield Township. Her home was devastated by flood damage in April of 2013. The basement flooded to the top of the stairs. Rodriguez remembers having to throw garbage bags full of her personal belongings out, because they were destroyed by sitting water.

All of the drywall in her basement had to be removed. She is still in need of assistance to help cover the cost of repairing home foundation cracks, as well as needing a new sewage system and potentially a hot water heater due to the flood damage.

Rodriguez contacted NWHP for a program application, and was able to be pre-qualified over the phone to receive the one-time grant assistance. The grant assistance available for qualified homeowners is up to $25,000.

Countless others have also qualified for the program, and those in need of assistance are encouraged to apply now.

The Residential Disaster Recovery Program is provided by the Cook County Department of Planning and Development, within the Bureau of Economic Development.

NWHP's program covers residential homeowners in suburban Cook County that live west and north of 39th Street who are income qualified for this program. Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) covers the portions of Cook County that are south of 39th street.
