Come to the historic Colonel Palmer House between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, April 2, and discover what scouting is all about. The day begins at 11 a.m. with an opening flag ceremony presented by local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops.
All visitors will enjoy activities that include games, Boy Scout Monkey Bridge, songs, primitive outdoor skills, and Girl Scout SWAPS. Hands-on demonstrations include lashings, outdoor cooking, and leatherwork. Also enjoy demonstrations of carving and branding irons.
Come inside Colonel Palmer House for a tour and see historical displays of Boy Scout and Girl Scout uniforms, patches and more. Learn about the history of Crystal Lake troops, when they formed and how they continue today.
See if you can guess "What that Patch Is" and enjoy Girl Scout Ways badge activities. Don't miss Girl Scout historian Louise Glon at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. as she portrays Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts of America.
The day will include a presentation by Eagle Scout candidate Matt McCabe from Crystal Lake Troop 168 of his completed Eagle Scout service project. Matt's service project includes the restoration of outdoor benches for use at the Colonel Palmer House.
The restored benches were originally made by Authur Ehrke who was born in the home in 1918. Each restored bench will have a plaque informing visitors about its historical significance to the Colonel Palmer House.
Local representatives from Boy Scouts of America, Blackhawk Area Council and the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois will answer questions or sign up those interested in becoming Scouts. The closing flag ceremony will be at 2 p.m.
