Learn how to appraise your treasures at MCC courses
Uncover the many treasures you may have in your possession and consider attending any or all three educational sessions about heirlooms, appraising decorative arts or estate planning presented by the Friends of MCC Foundation.
The educational sessions serve as a prelude to the "What's It Worth?" summer appraisal show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at MCC, presented by the MCC Foundation, in partnership with Leslie Hindman Auctioneers. The appraisal show features informal appraisals on antiques and collectible items brought in by attendees. Appraisal sessions will be 15 minutes and are by appointment only. A $10 fee is required for each item to be appraised.
The educational seminars include "Estate Planning Seminar: What You Really Need to Know" from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 29. This seminar is presented by Campion, Curran, Lamb & Cunabaugh, P.C. in the Scot Room at MCC, in Room B178. This is ideal for anyone who owns property and has assets. Individuals will learn the value of a comprehensive estate plan and how to revise it, and include such items as health care decisions, guardian issues for minors and powers of attorney.
The second educational seminar will feature "The Art of Heirloom Jewelry" from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 5. It is presented by Bret Dougherty of Studio 2015 Jewelry in Woodstock. With more than 40 years of experience as leaders in the jewelry business, the Dougherty family, owners of Studio 2015, will discuss heirloom jewelry. Topics will include understanding the value of heirloom jewelry, jewelry maintenance, the best way to pass jewelry on to loved ones and repurposing heirloom jewelry.
The third educational seminar, "The Art of Appraising: Focus on Fine and Decorative Arts" will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 12. Topics will include the art or science of appraising fine and decorative arts from an experienced professional. Lynn Carlson, a well-known artist, art appraiser, consultant and curator from Crystal Lake, will discuss valuation for specific purposes (such as insurance, estate distribution, donation and resale) as well as the all-important identification of art.
