MCCD to host 'A Coin for Miss Rowena' reading and book signing

Join McHenry County Conservation District for an exciting adventure that ties the past to the present at "A Coin for Miss Rowena" reading and book signing from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 30, at Powers-Walker House Historic Landmark in Glacial Park, Route 31 and Harts Road in Ringwood.

On a visit to the old family farm, Sam and Kelly are surprised to find a hidden room containing a journal from 1840. Not only does the journal tie their family to the Underground Railroad, it recounts a harrowing tale of runaway slaves, slave hunters and the people who knowingly broke the law to help runaways escape to freedom. Join the author as she reads from her book "A Coin for Miss Rowena" and shares stories of the local land and the historic house. Explore how the house was when the main characters lived here. Author Denise R. Collins will be available to sign and sell her book.

This is a "For Adults and Families" program. Registration is required by Sunday, April 23. This program is free to McHenry County residents and $5 for nonresidents.

Register online at www.mccdistrict.org, by phone for free programs only at (815) 479-5779, by mail-in and drop-off at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road in Crystal Lake, or drop-off only at Lost Valley Visitor Center, Route 31 and Harts Road in Ringwood.
