Get arrowhead identified by archeologist at Glacial Park

Submitted by McHenry County Conservation District

Try your hand at throwing an atlatl and pretend you are on a prehistoric big-game hunt at McHenry County Conservation District’s Archeological Awareness from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at Glacial Park’s historic Powers-Walker House at Route 31 and Harts Road in Ringwood.

Archaeologists will be on hand to describe how these prehistoric technologies are discovered and interpreted and will share a timeline of the prehistoric past.

Examples of artifacts will be on display including some of those found at the Powers-Walker house.

Young ones can dig for buried treasures in the Explorer’s sandbox. Stone grinding and other prehistoric skills will also be demonstrated. Additionally, a mounted cavalryman will explain the archaeology of Little Big Horn. Bring in your own arrowheads (points) or prehistoric tools for identification by professional archaeologists.

The program is free and registration is not required for this drop-in event. For more information contact Prairieview Education Center at (815) 479-5779 or www.MCCDistrict.org.
