Algonquin church harvests own corn for pantries

Submitted by Light of Christ

Light of Christ Lutheran Church in Algonquin put their future church site at Long Meadow Parkway and Sleepy Hollow Road in Algonquin to good use by working with a local farmer.

Joe Menotti, a master gardener and member of Light of Christ, had the idea of planting sweet corn for the local food pantries on the land. He contacted Dan Fruin who was renting the property about planting sweet corn for the food pantries. Dan agreed to do the planting and Tom’s Market donated the seed corn for the planting.

The beginning of August the corn was ready to harvest.

Members of Light of Christ of all ages along with other community friends worked together to harvest the sweet corn. There was more than enough sweet corn harvested to donate to 13 plus local food pantries. Supplying the food pantries with fresh sweet corn is a nice addition to the canned goods that are gathered for the food pantry guests.
