Tallman’s return powers Wauconda
Megan Tallman’s return from a finger injury helped spark Wauconda’s girls volleyball team.
The Indiana University-bound setter/hitter slammed 6 kills and dished out 9 assists in her season debut, as the Bulldogs pulled out a 25-23, 25-16 win over host Round Lake in North Suburban Prairie Division action Wednesday night.
Wauconda (7-5, 1-2) also received 7 kills and 7 digs from Susan Karhoff, while LeAnne Sakowicz had 10 assists, 4 kills and 2 aces. Sara Sexton added 4 kills, and Ashley Anderson chipped in 5 digs and 2 aces for the Bulldogs. Emily Holub served a pair of aces as well.
Lakes d. Antioch: Emily Aigner’s 7 kills, 3 blocks, 13 digs and 1 ace helped the Eagles win 25-17, 25-15 to improve to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in the North Suburban Prairie.
Shannon Grant also played big at the net for Lakes, recording 4 kills and 5 blocks, while both Haley Halberg and Stephanie Reed (14 assists) served 3 aces.
Antioch (7-4) got 4 kills from Abbi McIlhany, while Marissa Grant had 7 assists, 2 kills and 2 blocks.
“Not a good night for the Sequoits,” coach Glen Heitman said. “We had too many service errors, and we could not serve-receive well enough to run an offense. Lakes is too good of a team to keep giving them free balls. We will learn from this match and continue to improve as the season goes on.”
Libertyville wins twice: In Wheaton Classic pool play, the Wildcats defeated Hinsdale Central 25-12, 25-18 and Wheaton North 25-16, 25-13.
Against Hinsdale Central, Rhiannon Prentiss had 5 kills, while Alex Basler and Taylor Zant each posted 3 blocks. Kristen Webb added 7 digs, Brooke Donovan delivered 4 aces, and Cindy Zhou distributed 9 assists.
Julia Smagacz’s 6 kills, Zant’s four and Basler’s three led the way against Wheaton North. Basler and Zant had 6 and 5 kills, respectively. Zhou totaled 4 blocks and 9 assists. Libertyville (8-2) also got contributions from Webb (21 digs), Prentiss (12 digs, 3 aces) and Cassidy Ostmeyer (8 assists).
Vernon Hills d. North Chicago: Jenn Claussen delivered 5 kills and 3 aces for the Cougars in their 25-4, 25-1 win in North Suburban Prairie action.
Tori Smith served 6 aces for Vernon Hills (5-12, 2-0), while Mia Polisky and Kasey Firnbach also had 3 aces. Shannon Nugent slammed a pair of kills.
“We served incredibly well,” Cougars coach Abbie Gutzmer said. “We need to keep this momentum going.”
