Lake Co. YMCA annual 5K event Oct. 6 benefits kids' fitness

Participants will get some needed exercise in the fresh air while helping expand youth fitness options in the community as Lake County Family YMCA hosts its 2nd Annual 5K Walk/Run at its Vernon Hills branch. A portion of this year's proceeds will help the Y offer more fitness programming for kids.

Runners and walkers of all ages will step off at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Central Lake YMCA, 700 Lakeview Parkway, Vernon Hills. From there, they'll follow a scenic path through the Arbor Theater and three parks back to the Y to complete this timed, family-oriented event. Check-in/registration begins at 7:15 a.m.

The 5K Walk/Run is open to participants of all ages and skill levels – including first-timers. “For those who have been physically inactive, this is a great way to start a healthy lifestyle,” says Jaclyn Kling, Central Lake YMCA health & wellness coordinator. “We want to encourage the newbies. For those who'd like some help preparing for their first 5K, Lake County Family YMCA offers running/walking clubs beginning in mid-September.”

“So get fired up about fitness, have some fun and support the Y,” Kling adds. Funds raised will help the goal of expanding Lake County Family YMCA's youth fitness offerings by adding programs and equipment – beginning, hopefully, by the end of this year.

Entry fees are $25 per runner/walker by Oct. 1; $35 after that. Participants will receive an event T-shirt and goodie bag (while supplies last). There'll also be plenty of food, fun and prizes.

In addition, participants can collect pledges to further benefit the cause. There also are corporate and individual sponsorship opportunities available through Sept. 15. Sponsors' names will appear on the T-shirts given to 5K runners/walkers. Special appreciation goes to Baxter International Inc. and High Sierra® for their generous support of this event.
