Foxdale Park new home to Disc Golf Course in Addison

In response to the growing popularity of disc golf, a 9-hole (basket) course was added to Foxdale Park, 1500 N. Itasca Rd. by the Addison Park District. Unlike regular golf, there is no fee to play this course and a tee time is not required. This course is not lighted and the park is open from dawn until dusk.

There are some similarities to traditional golf in the way disc golf is played. The object of the game is to complete each hole in the fewest number of strokes, or throws. There is a starting tee box at each hole where players take aim at a target basket set at varying distances. Consecutive shots are taken from the place where the disc lands before reaching the target basket. Disc golf players share the same joys and frustrations as regular golfers, whether it's sinking a long putt or hitting a tree in the fairway.

According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, this sport is growing rapidly worldwide because it is easy to learn, appeals to all ages, and most courses are free, such as the one in Foxdale Park. Additionally, the average cost of one throwing disc or Frisbee is less than $10.

Foxdale Park's disc golf course is rated Par 3 appealing to both beginners and those wanting to improve their scoring shots. The course is set on fairly level terrain with only one water hazard. A course map is available online at the Professional Disc Golf Association's course directory at www.pdga.com.

The Addison Park District is committed to providing the highest quality recreational opportunities and open space for everyone. The 2012 Summer Fun Guide was delivered to the homes of Addison residents on Friday, April 20. Additional copies of the brochure are available in each facility and online at www.addisonparks.org with a full curriculum of leisure activities for all ages and lifestyles.
