Oakton still alive in sectional tournament

In the double-elimination NJCAA Region IV sectional baseball tournament hosted by Oakton on Saturday, not a whole heck of a lot was decided.

Each of the three teams went 1-1, meaning there will be two games today in Des Plaines.

Prairie State lost to Moraine Valley 6-0 in the first game Saturday; Prairie State then defeated Oakton 7-5 in 10 innings; and Oakton stayed alive by beating Moraine Valley 11-3.

Action resumes at noon today as Moraine Valley faces Prairie State. The loser of that game is eliminated, while the winner advances to face Oakton for a scheduled 3 p.m. start. Oakton gets that spot as a result of having the highest seed.

Oakton (40-17) got a big day from Maine West product Ryan Tuntland, who went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI against Moraine Valley and 3-for-4 with 3 RBI against Prairie State. Brett Synek had the big hit against Moraine Valley, a 3-run homer.

Dan Lauria (Rolling Meadows) went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI against Moraine Valley.

Oakton coach Bill Fratto says he’ll start Troy Mannebach in today’s games.

In other sectionals, Elgin, Madison and Blackhawk each went 2-0 in Saturday’s games and are well positioned to advance to the next round of the postseason.
