COD Celebrates Student Academic Excellence

College of DuPage recently hosted a “Celebration of Academic Excellence” to recognize the 2011-2012 Honors and Presidential Scholars.

“College of DuPage is thrilled to have helped lay the foundation for all your future successes and we congratulate you, not only on what you've achieved here, but on what you'll achieve in the future as well,” said Executive Vice President Joe Collins. “You are the type of students that make teaching a true pleasure. Thank you for spending the last year or two here at College of DuPage. We are proud to have played such an important role in your education.”

Honors Program Director and History Professor Helen Feng lauded the students for their achievements both in and out of the classroom and congratulated them on their many achievements, both in and out of the classroom.

“We are privileged to serve the honors community here at College of DuPage and we are pleased to build lasting relationships with our students,” she said. “Their academic success is an inspiration to us all.”

Honors Scholars

Members of the Honors Scholars are students who have successfully completed a minimum of 15 semester hours of Honors courses, including an Honors seminar or Humanities 2210 Leadership Development course. Students must have completed this requirement while maintaining a Grade Point Average of at least 3.2/4.0 in order to receive Honors Scholars designations on their transcripts.

Presidential and Academic Scholars

Students accepting the Presidential Scholars Award are required to pursue a degree or certificate; be enrolled in 15 credit hours per semester; complete a minimum of 15 semester hours of Honors courses, including an Honors seminar or Humanities 2210 Leadership Development course; and complete a designated Service Learning course or 20 hours of approved volunteer work within their first year of the scholarship. To receive the Presidential Scholars Designation on their transcripts, students completing these requirements maintained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5/4.0 at COD.

Also recognized during the Celebration of Academic Excellence were Jessica Johnson of Carol Stream, who received a full scholarship to Elmhurst College; and Brendan McCormack of West Chicago, who received a full scholarship to North Central College, presented by Stephen Mueller, Elmhurst College director of Transfer Admission, and Linda Doyle, North Central College associate Director of Transfer Admission.
