Cavin does it again for Conant
Senior Briana Cavin fired a no-hitter with 9 strikeouts as Conant remained undefeated in the Mid-Suburban West with a 7-0 shutout over host Hoffman Estates on Wednesday.
The Cougars (20-2, 8-0) were led on offense by sophomore Rachel O’Malley (2-for-4), who belted a home run and triple for 4 RBI with 2 runs.
Junior Sarah Thompson (2-for-3) was the Cougars’ other multiple hitter against the Hawks (3-12-1, 1-7).
Fremd 6, Schaumburg 3: Junior Ashlynne Schwantz (10-2) reached double digit wins for the visiting Vikings (19-5, 6-2) as she threw a 7-hitter at the Saxons (10-10, 3-5).
Mandi Matsumoto (2-for-4), Michelle Mazur (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Kristie Salerno (2-for-4 RBI), Tracy Welninski (RBI) and Janelle Schneider (RBI) helped spark the Vikings’ offense.
Saxons pitcher Alyssa Lancaster (5-4) went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI while other top hitting Saxons were Courtney Plackner (2-for-2) and Dana Giannelli (2-for-3).
Barrington 8, Palatine 0: Barrington (18-4, 6-2) scored 7 runs in the fifth inning, including a 2-run homer to left with two outs by junior Morgan Olszewski.
It was her second homer of the season and 15th for the team.
Kelsey Kazmier (2-for-3, double, 3 RBI) was the only multiple hitter for the Fillies, whose winning pitcher Cassidy Kraimer (2 hits, 9 strikeouts, 1 walk) improved to 10-3. Emma Woods (1 hit, 1 strikeout, no walks) threw the final inning.
Palatine (11-11, 4-4) received doubles from Tori Walzak and pitcher Megan Hedstrom (2-for-3).
Hersey 9, Wheeling 6 (9 inn.): Hersey (10-11, 2-6) scored 3 runs in the top of the seventh to get the win for pitcher Sarah Platt (4-3) in relief. Platt also sparkled at the plate, going 4-for-5.
Alysia Zaucha (3-for-5, RBI), Platt, Michelle Helminski (2-for-4, RBI), Gina Fasolo (2-for-5, double, RBI), Melissa Cecala (triple), Alex Tiniglia and Angela Lazzeritti (RBI) were other top hitters for Hersey.
Sara Kern (4-for-5) had 2 doubles for host Wheeling (3-14, 1-7) while Nikki Mikosz had one. Teammate Nette Howard went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI.
“Angela Schmiederer (Hersey sophomore catcher) and Nikki Mikosz (Wildcats freshman receiver)) were both outstanding behind the plate with so many great plays,” said Wheeling coach Mike Caringella.
Kern also produced an inning-ending catch.
With runners on second and third, the Wildcats junior center fielder made an all-out diving catch to save 2 runs early in the game.
Elk Grove 11, Prospect 1: Dani Goranson (12-3) pitched 5 innings allowing 2 hits with 8 strikeouts for the win. Andrea Starr went the final 2 innings, allowing 2 hits, 1 run and striking out two.
Elk Grove (16-3, 7-1) scored in the first when leadoff hitter Goranson (2-for-4, walk, double, RBI) beat out an infield hit.
After a groundout, Krista Soesbe singled to right to score Goranson.
The Grens scored 6 runs in the third inning.
With one out, Soesbe (3-for-5 with 3 RBI) started the rally with a single.
After 2 errors, Starr collected a 2-run single to center to score Soesbe and Becca Walz.
Becca Maher added a 2-run double to right center.
The Grens added a run in the fourth when Starr homered to left center. Elk Grove added 3 runs in the seventh when Marjorie Sloan walked with one out. Goranson reached on an error and Danielle Boffice doubled to score Sloan. Soesbe then added a 2-run single.
Prospect (6-16, 3-5) scored in the bottom of the sixth when Michele Molini doubled to left center. Julie Mazur then reached on an infield error to put runners on the corners for senior Hanna Lythberg (5-10).
Lythberg (3-for-3, 2 doubles, RBI) singled home Molini from third base before Starr struck out the final two batters.
Elissa Payne also doubled for EG.
Leyden 5, Willowbrook 0: Senior Morgan Maize belted a 2-run home run and was the winning pitcher for Leyden (17-5).
