Breitzman, Fremd lead way
A pair of runs in the top of the first inning were more than enough support for Lee Breitzman and Fremd in Wednesday’s Mid-Suburban West baseball game at Schaumburg.
And the early lead that held up for a 5-1 victory also put the Vikings (13-8, 6-2) all alone in the division lead at the halfway point of the league schedule. Barrington (15-7, 5-3) dropped into second place with an 8-1 loss to Hoffman Estates.
Breitzman threw a 3-hitter with a 5 strikeouts and no walks and allowed his only run in the sixth. Josh Jyawook went 2-for-4 with a RBI and Keith Giagnorio went 2-for-4 as Fremd won for the fifth time in six games going into Friday’s home crossover with East leader Rolling Meadows.
Patrick Bellinger went 2-for-3 and Matt Brancato drove in the only run for Schaumburg (11-11, 3-5).
Prospect 7, Buffalo Grove 5: Shane Joyce had the go-ahead, 2-run single with the bases loaded and two out in a 3-run sixth to keep visiting Prospect (8-13, 5-3) tied for second with Hersey in the MSL East and a game behind Rolling Meadows. Sophomore Jackson Wrede hit a 3-run homer in a 4-run first and A.J. Compton got the victory with 4 innings of 2-hit, shutout relief with 3 strikeouts.
Alex Fritz tripled as BG (8-14, 3-5) took a 5-4 lead with a 4-run third.
St. Viator 3, Carmel 2: Chris Myjak threw a 3-hitter and Mike McGrath went 2-for-2 with a homer and 2 RBI for Viator (13-9, 2-3) in the East Suburban Catholic Conference win in Mundelein. Myjak threw 90 pitches and had 3 strikeouts and 1 walk as the Lions bounced back from a 13-2 loss to the Corsairs on Monday.
