Kakareka’s no-hitter lifts Schaumburg
Schaumburg senior Renee Kakareka (3-4) fired a no-hitter with 9 strikeouts as the Saxons softball team posted a 9-0 shutout over visiting Hoffman Estates (3-11-1, 1-6) in the MSL West on Monday.
Junior Dana Giannelli (2-for-3) belted her first home run of the season for Schaumburg (10-9, 3-4) while other top hitters were Hannah Kerr (1-for-4, 2 RBI), Alyssa Lancaster (2-for-3, RBI) and Shannon Felde (2-for-2, 3 RBI).
Conant 11, Palatine 5: Conant junior catcher Miranda Cavin hit a grand slam and went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and 6 RBI as the MSL West-leading Cougars improved to 19-2 and 7-0.
Cougars ace Briana Cavin (18-2) went all 7 innings, striking out 16 and giving up 9 hits.
Other top hitters for visiting Conant were Allie Bauch (3-for-5, 3 runs), Kim Jacobson (2-for-4, 2 doubles, 3 RBI) and Rachel O’Malley (double, 3 runs).
The Pirates (11-10, 4-3), who led 2-0 and 4-3 before Conant surged ahead 11-4, were led by Lauren Logan (2-for-3, 2 runs, RBI), Megan Hedstrom (2-for-4, triple, 2 RBI), Courtney English (2-for-4) and Tori Walzak (2-for-4, triple, 2 runs).
Hedstrom (8-8) struck out four in 3 innings while Jules Udoni recorded 3 strikeouts in the final 3 innings.
Elk Grove 11, Rolling Meadows 1 (6 innings): Elk Grove (15-3, 6-1) received doubles from Dani Goranson (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Becca Walz (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Andrea Starr (3-for-3, 4 RBI), Tori Liewergen (3-for-4, RBI) and Elissa Payne. Devan Parkison also went 2-for-4 for the Grens, who have a 2-game lead in the MSL East.
Goranson (11-3) also notched the win with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk.
Host Meadows (13-7, 4-3), whose top two pitchers Sara Brunlieb and Hannah Whidden are sidelined, was led on offense by Sam Anderson (2-for-3, double, RBI). Josie Suchecki and Chloe Prodanovic its other hits.
Meadows freshman pitcher Lauren Hattory (2-2) did not walk a batter.
Buffalo Grove 4, Hersey 2: An RBI single by Dea Barton (3-for-3, double) tied the game at 2-2 and the host Bison got the lead for good at 3-2 when Erin Barton scored on Becca Winter’s groundout in the bottom of the fifth.
BG (6-13, 2-5) added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by Megan Fu (2-for-4).
Freshman Julia Camardo (4-8) earned the win with a 5-hitter and 7 strikeouts.
Hersey (9-11, 1-6), which scored its runs in the top of the first, led received a double from Alex Tinaglia.
Prospect 8, Wheeling 0: Prospect senior ace Hanna Lythberg (5-9) threw a 4-hitter for the shutout and also had an RBI.
Junior Michele Molini (3-for-5, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) led the Knights (6-15, 3-4) followed by Ally Schuldt (2-for-4, RBI), Jill Sadowski (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Cassie Poulos (RBI) and Amy Graham (2-for-4).
Ashley Hafertepe was 2-for-3 for host Wheeling (3-13, 1-6).
Leyden 6, Hinsdale South 1: Leyden improved to 16-5 with the victory at the Ballpark at Rosemont.
