Hersey snaps losing streak
For the first time this season Hersey was streaking in the wrong direction.
But the Huskies put an end to their 3-game losing streak as Erik Stoltzner went 4-for-4 with 2 RBI in a 4-3 nonconference baseball victory over Maine West in Des Plaines.
Josh Koutnik had an RBI single and Stoltzner followed with a 2-run double to put the Huskies (13-4) ahead to stay in a 3-run third inning. Ryan Rodgers had an RBI single in the sixth in support of winner Pat Nix, who went 5 innings before Aaron DeGeorge came in for the save.
Scott Costello had an RBI groundout and Justin Mustari had an RBI single for Maine West (10-9) in a 2-run first. An error on Tom Kukec’s one-out single in the seventh cut the deficit to a run but DeGeorge left Kukec at second base with two outs.
St. Viator, Benet split: St. Viator (12-8, 2-1) got only 2 hits in a 10-0 loss in the first game of an East Suburban Catholic Conference home doubleheader but Gunnar Kay and Chris Myjak combined on a 3-2 victory over Benet in the second game in Arlington Heights.
Kay went 61⁄3 innings with 7 strikeouts and Myjak got the final two outs for the save. Cosimo Cannella, Myjak and Adam Naliwajko drove in runs for the Lions.
Barrington goes 1-1 in triangular: John Shattuck went 2-for-3 and Dylan Balogh got the victory as Barrington (14-6) beat Jones Prep 6-3 in its triangular. Frank Waliczek went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Aaron Foley went 2-for-3 for Barrington as it lost 6-3 to New Trier in 8 innings.
Leyden sweeps Morton: Angel Sanchez threw a 1-hitter in the opener and Mike Szopinski went 4-for-7 with 4 RBI as Leyden (10-8, 3-5) broke a 6-game losing streak by sweeping a West Suburban Gold doubleheader 10-1 and 10-5 at Morton.
Sanchez (5-2) had 8 strikeouts and 2 walks and also had 2 hits and 2 RBI in his victory. Ivan Nevarez went 3-for-4 and then got the win in Game 2 as Brandon Chillemi went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.
Rockford Boylan 2, Palatine 1: Dan Jeske was the tough-luck loser as he gave up only 1 hit and took a shutout into the bottom of the sixth for Palatine (8-14). Jeske retired the first 11 hitters before giving up his only hit but a hit batter, walk and intentional walk led to a two-out, two-run single for Boylan.
Palatine scored in the fourth on Scott Schneberger’s one-out double and Kurt Becker’s RBI single.
Glenbrook South 6, Prospect 5 (11 inn.): Jack Landwehr went 3-for-5 with a double and 3 RBI and Nico Witanen and Brad Gerdes had 2 hits apiece as the first 5 runs allowed by Prospect (6-13) were unearned.
Maine South 7, Elk Grove 3: Michael Anciulis and Johnny Assimakopoulous doubled as Elk Grove (12-7) was outhit 8-4.
Stevenson 7, Rolling Meadows 3: Matt Hendricks went 2-for-3 with a double for Rolling Meadows (12-8) in the nonconference loss.
Glenbrook North 4, Fremd 0: A two-out single to left in the fourth by Connor Bieda was the only hit for Fremd (11-8) in the nonconference loss in Northbrook.
