Meadows’ Dennis a menace to York
Rolling Meadows junior Matt Dennis was a real menace to visiting York in Monday’s nonconference baseball game.
Dennis drove in all 3 runs and threw a complete-game 5-hitter as Rolling Meadows (2-1) won 3-2 in its third straight 1-run game of the season. Dennis had 7 strikeouts and 2 walks after saving last Thursday’s 4-3 win for Eric Lowe over St. Viator.
Dennis went 2-for-2 at the plate with a go-ahead 2-run double in the fifth inning and an infield RBI single in the third. Mike Dolan also went 2-for-2 for the Mustangs.
Elk Grove 3, Glenbard North 2: Elk Grove (3-1) manufactured the tying and winning runs as it had only 3 hits in its nonconference win at Glenbard North.
Jake Andrews and Cody Gustafson combined to scatter 7 hits for the Grenadiers. They broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth when Jack Czeszewski walked and came around on Cody Schrader’s groundout, Peter Kinsella’s infield single and a wild pitch.
Robby Uehara scored the tying run in the fifth on a leadoff walk, stolen base, passed ball and Andrews’ RBI single. The Grens’ first run scored on a wild pitch.
Andrews got the victory as he went 5 innings and allowed both runs with 2 strikeouts and 4 walks. Gustafson allowed 1 hit and no walks and had 2 strikeouts in 2 innings for the save.
Hoffman Estates 8, Lake Park 5: Winner Brian Cvitkovich threw 5 hitless innings and had 3 hits, 3 RBI and a double for Hoffman (3-3) in the nonconference win. Zach Hommowun had a 2-run double, Ethan Bloom had 2 hits and a double and Kevin Grudzinski earned the save.
Hersey 8, Springfield Griffin 4: Trevor Haas contributed to his victory with 3 of Hersey’s 16 hits in the first of its four-game swing through central Illinois. Haas went 6 innings with 5 strikeouts and no walks and Aaron DeGeorge had 2 strikeouts in a hitless inning of relief.
Mike Danielak had a tiebreaking two-out, 2-run triple in 4-run fifth that put Hersey (2-0) ahead to stay at 4-2 and Sean Reszotko followed with an RBI single. Tyler Perkowitz, Erik Stoltzner, Josh Koutnik, James Ioratti and Nick Nolan had 2 hits apiece.
Barrington 3, Niles West 0: Frank Waliczek fired a 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts for Barrington (5-2) and Max Redpath doubled.
St. Viator 10, Deerfield 0: Tim McElroy (2-0) threw a 4-hitter for St. Viator (2-2) in the five-inning victory. Chris Myjak doubled and Joe Rossi tripled.
Leyden 4, Fenton 3: Ivan Nevarez drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for Leyden (4-0) in the nonconference win. Anthony Aleman got the victory for the Eagles.
Prospect 10, South Fort Myers (Fla.) 2: Welby Malczewski went 5 innings for the victory for Prospect (2-3) in Florida.
Evanston 14, Buffalo Grove 9: Mike DiViesti went 3-for-3 with a triple and Jake Fanella went 3-for-4 with a double for Buffalo Grove in the nonconference loss. Alex Fritz had 2 hits and 2 RBI and Rich Zirngibl had 2 hits.
Buffalo Grove splits downstate: Erich Froemming went the distance in his first varsity start and victory as Buffalo Grove beat Morris 11-1 in 6 innings this weekend in downstate Jacksonville. Ryan Schumi and Mike DiViesti had 2 hits, Alex Fritz had 2 RBI and Richie Zirngibl tripled.
On Sunday, BG lost to Notre Dame 3-2 on a game-winning infield single in the bottom of the seventh. Robert Hawkins was the tough-luck loser as Jimmy Pinakidis went 3-for-3 with a double and DiViesti doubled.
Freshman Adnan Sator went the distance for Notre Dame, which is in its first year with former BG star Nelson Gord as head coach and former BG head coach John Wendell as an assistant.
Christian Liberty splits downstate: David Cabrera had 2 doubles and Keegan Nichols got the victory as Christian Liberty (1-2) beat Bushnell-Prairie City 7-5 on Saturday at Bushnell.
Cabrera took the loss and Shawn Anderson doubled as South Fulton pulled out a 3-1 win with 2 seventh-inning runs.
