Volunteers make a difference in seniors’ lives
Submitted by RSVP of Kane, Kendall and McHenry Counties
The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program, sponsored by Senior Services Associates, makes a difference in the lives of seniors in our community. RSVP volunteers provide a number of service activities enabling seniors to remain independent and in their own homes.
One of the greatest threats to seniors is loss of transportation independence. Once individuals are no longer able to drive, they are at risk for institutionalization. RSVP volunteers along with others coordinate with programs that link drivers with those who have doctor appointments, need dialysis, or are looking for transportation to the grocery store or to pick up prescriptions. Willing volunteers are screened, interviewed, and agree to a background check, before beginning service. In addition, with the high cost of gas, volunteers are eligible for mileage reimbursement and are covered by an excess liability insurance policy.
Another area volunteers provide critical service is delivering meals to homebound and frail seniors. RSVP recruits volunteers to work directly with the Salvation Army, who screen and train those who are willing to help. This vital service not only provides a nutritional meal to seniors, another facet of the program is for those who are isolated, daily checks are made ensuring their well-being.
RSVP recruits and refers friendly visitors for those seniors who are lonely and are looking for companionship. Isolation many times leads to depression and a friendly face may make the difference. Volunteers are screened and trained by program staff.
Since 2007, McHenry County volunteers have been recruited to assist area seniors with small home repairs. This service is designed to assist seniors who live on their own to keep their home and property in good repair by providing helping hands.
RSVP is sponsored by Senior Services Associates and is administered by the Corporation for National Service, the federal agency that improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering. Members include those individuals who are age 55 and older and are willing to use their lifetime of experience, skills, and talents to make a difference. The staff works to match your skills with community need.
