WW South edges Glenbard North in double OT

Friday night’s Glenbard North at Wheaton Warrenville South boys basketball game had plenty of speed, physical play and especially toward the end of regulation time, plenty of offense on both sides.

However, the contest was decided in two overtimes on free throws, with the Tigers prevailing 68-66, thanks to an 11-of-16 free-throw shooting performance during the second overtime period. Glenbard North made good on just 2-of-7 free-throw attempts during both OTs.

WW South coach Bob Szorc said his team has made great strides with the regular season quickly winding down.

“We’ve made huge strides in the last month. And you always want to be in that situation come tournament time,” he said.

It was not a night of big leads as the teams were tied at 22 at intermission. The Tigers (10-14, 6-6 DuPage Valley Conference) led 37-36 after three quarters. Glenbard North (13-10, 8-4), though, had a 4-point lead with 3:21 left in regulation on a basket by Josh Fleming, who led all scorers with 27 points.

Tim Zyburt and Michael Kramer responded with baskets to make it 48-47 Tigers with 2:30 left.

Fleming hit his second 3 in regulation to put the Panthers up 50-48 with just 18 seconds left, but Zach Zlabis the game sent into the first overtime with just 5.3 seconds left on a drive through the lane.

It was 57-57 at the end of the first overtime, and the fouls had begun to pile up on the Panthers. WW South grew hotter at the free-throw line and the only offense Glenbard North generated was three 3-point baskets by Fleming.

Danny Roadman paced the Tigers with 24 points and a 14-of-16 showing from the free-throw line.

“Glenbard North is a great team. We didn’t shoot well tonight, but we still hung in there. Earlier in the season, this is a game that we would have loss,” he said.
