Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva Gives Care Kits to Seniors

The Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva (UUSG) recently donated 120 senior care kits to Humanitarian Services Project's (HSP) Senior Citizen Project, demonstrating their emphasis on compassion and caring. The bags contained personal care items such as shampoo, lotion, toothbrushes, and toothpaste, as well as fun items such as hot chocolate and greeting cards. The congregation held a special collection in order to purchase personal care items for every senior citizen in HSP's project.

The UUSG believes in “promoting practical goodness in the world” and assisting each other in their personal search for truth. They are members of the Unitarian Universalist Association and emphasize acceptance of all beliefs. They meet on Sundays at 9:30 am and 11:15 am.

The care kits will be given to the seniors in HSP's program on the next delivery day. The 120 impoverished seniors in HSP's Senior Citizen Project receive 90 lbs of groceries delivered directly to their doorstep each month. The monthly delivery includes over 15 selections of fresh fruits and vegetables, 7 frozen meats, 5 grocery bags of non-perishables, 2 bags of paper products, containing items such as toilet paper, tissue, and personal care items. A sponsorship for a senior is only $70 a month, $35 a month for co-sponsorships, and also includes monthly gifts from a secret-pal (a community donor), gifts at Christmas time and a monthly meal delivered by volunteers. The secret-pal gifts range from $5-25 and also may include items on the senior's wishlist such as furniture or computers.

About The Humanitarian Service Project

HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,600 children received gifts and 100 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides a monthly food delivery and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 700 children. Feed the Kids provides low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
