BAM! comes to ECC

A Chicago-based dance troupe brought a little rhythm to the opening of Black History Month celebrations at Elgin Community College.

BAM!, part of the Chicago Human Rhythm Project, showcased tap and percussive dances Monday, in the auditorium of the college’s Advanced Technology Center. The ensemble’s show titled, “We All Got Rhythm,” shows that in every culture, rhythm is a natural form of expression.

The ensemble, according to its website, has an extensive repertory that includes the classics, contemporary jazz tap and experimental rhythmic expression like body drumming.

BAM! has performed to more than 36,000 students in 120 shows over the past three years.

Black History Month events continues this week with the Evolution of Dance. At the top of each hour between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the Student Resource Center Jobe Lounge, visitors can learn a dance style popular in the black community like stepping, hip hop and slide.
