Fremd hangs on at Hoffman Estates

Freshman Haley Gorecki made 2 free throws with less than 10 seconds remaining to secure Fremd's 55-50 victory over host Hoffman Estates in Mid-Suburban League girls basketball action on Friday night.

Gorecki ended up with 13 points while Jessi Wiedemann led the Vikes with 14 and Ashley McConnell had 10. Bernie Williams chipped in 9.

Fremd improved to 17-4 and 6-0 in the West, taking a 2-game lead over Schaumburg (11-11, 4-2) and Palatine (13-8, 4-2).

Becca Stoczynski grabbed a rebound of a missed free throw and put it back up for a basket which got the Hawks to within 53-50 with 30 seconds left.

"I was very proud of the girls," said Hoffman coach Mike Nocella. "Obviously we wanted to win but I was very happy with how the girls played."

Stoczynski led the Hawks (7-13, 0-6) with 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Destinee Young added 9 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assist for Hoffman while Sara Burns (12 points) collected 5 steals. Mary Pettit (10 points) handed out 3 assists and Selena Martinez came off the bench to contribute 7 points.

Rolling Meadows 46, Elk Grove 34: Fittingly on senior night, four-year starter Amanda Gunn scored a game-high 14 points for host Meadows (19-3, 6-0), followed by sophomores Alexis Glasgow (13), Jenny Vliet (9) and Jackie Kemph (10).

The win leaves Meadows 1 game in front of Prospect (13-9, 5-1) in the MSL East.

"It was nice for our first senior class to get a win on their big day," said Mustangs coach Todd Hatfield. "I feel like it was just yesterday when Gunn and (Anne Marie) Lynch were out there starting as freshmen."

Diamond Boyd led Elk Grove (11-9, 2-5) with 13 points while freshman Amber Lindfors and junior Kelly Naughton each added 9.

"Diamond is a tough matchup for anyone and I thought we did a good job on her at different stretches of the game," Hatfield said.

The Mustangs will face Hersey for the championship of the Season's End tournament on Monday at Fenton High School at 7:30 p.m.

"We have a busy week in front of us and it starts Monday," Hatfield said.

Palatine 40, Conant 27: Palatine improved to 13-8 and 4-2 in the MSL West as junior guard Nia Pappas scored 17 points with 3 3-pointers. Katelyn Mayer added 9 points and McKenzie Wiedemann 6 for the winners. Allie Bauch paced Conant (6-15, 1-5) with 13 points.

Wheeling 39, Buffalo Grove 27: Wheeling (6-15, 2-4) earned it second straight MSL East win as senior Kellie Kuzmanic and junior Brie Majkowski each scored 11 points. Freshman Deanna Kuzmanic added 8 for the Wildcats.

Emily Cho's 7 points were tops for host Buffalo Grove (4-16, 1-6).

Maine West 51, Deerfield 47: Brittany Collins (23 points, 8 rebounds) and Amanda Hoye (10 points, 7 assists) led the visiting Warriors (8-13, 6-1) in the CSL North.

"Julia Huinker (6 points) did a nice job off the bench," said Maine West coach Derril Kipp, who also got 6 points from Ashley Collins along with 7 rebounds.

Maine West trailed 13-11 after one quarter but rallied to lead 20-18 at half and got up by as many as 12 points in the second half.

"Amanda (Hoye) played a really good floor game (with a career-high 7 assists) and set up Brittany for a lot of her baskets," Kipp said. "We played better in the second half. We were a little lackadaisical in the first half after the bus ride in the snow."
