Cary man sentenced on federal drug charges

A Cary man was the 10th of a group of defendants to plead guilty and be sentenced on charges of growing and distributing more than 1,000 kilograms of marijuana over 11 years.

Robert S. Cain was sentenced to more than 11 years in federal prison in exchange for his guilty plea Tuesday in Rockford. He was also ordered to pay a total of $1,100 by U.S. District Judge Frederick J. Kapala.

Federal prosecutors say Cain, 49, admitted he and his co-defendants grew and stored their marijuana supply in houses they leased or purchased, then sold the product to drug dealers beginning in January 1999 and continuing until March 2010.

Cain and co-defendant Graham Scott McGill, 59, rented a house in Bull Valley, which McGill outfitted to grow marijuana, prosecutors said. The men recruited others and used the residence as a grow house for about four years. The defendants also rented or purchased homes in Kildeer, Union, Woodstock and Marengo which they equipped for the purpose of growing marijuana, prosecutors said.

McGill, of Johnsburg, remains a fugitive. Cain is the last of the co-defendants in custody to be sentenced. They include: Charles P. Persico, 34, of Hoffman Estates, sentenced in November to 135 months in prison; Jonathan S. Romine, 34, of Lake in the Hills, sentenced in October to 46 months; Robert Stringini, 73, of Schaumburg, sentenced in September to 60 months; Loretta Cattani, 58, of Union, sentenced in November to 22 months; Sam Stringini, 34, of Schaumburg, sentenced in October to 58 months; Robert Nelson, 58, of Evanston, sentenced in August to 43 months; Clausen Johnson, 46, of Crystal Lake, sentenced in October to 37 months; and Vincent Fasano, 49, of Roselle, sentenced in October to four months in prison and ordered to forfeit property in Delavan, Wis.

In a related case, Jeffrey W. Romine, 32, of Woodstock plead guilty in May to facilitating the manufacture and distribution of marijuana and was sentenced to 48 months in prison.
