Lehocky shoots, and scores, for Vernon Hills

Alina Lehocky's career night lifted Vernon Hills' girls basketball team Thursday night.

Lehocky, a first-year varsity player, scored a season-high 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, as the Cougars remained perfect in the North Suburban Conference Prairie Division with a 75-50 win over visiting Lakes.

Vernon Hills (14-2, 6-0) received 17 points from Sydney Smith, too. Meri Bennett-Swanson and Lauren Webb scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, and Abby Springer had 6 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds. Julie Pecht chipped in 4 points, 6 steals and 5 assists for the Cougars, who led 22-10 after one quarter, 44-26 at halftime and 59-30 after three.

Lakes also had a pair of 17-point scorers in Ashlee Cunningham and Amanda Smith. Cunningham and Smith each sank two 3-pointers.

"(Vernon Hills) is too big, and we did not shoot the ball very well," Lakes coach Pete Schneider said. "I believe John Wooden said when asked, 'Do you want big players or fast players?' he answered, 'Give me big players because they do not get any shorter as the game goes on.'

"Well, our players fought hard and hustled, but wore down."

Grant 45, Round Lake 25: Morgan Jahnke scored 14 points (two 3-pointers) and Brittany Glover added 8 for the Bulldogs in the North Suburban Prairie contest.

Aaliyah Chastang and Adriana Pitts had 8 and 6 points, respectively, for Round Lake (4-14, 0-6).

Lake Zurich 56, Lake Forest 50: Stephanie Schmid's 22 points led the Bears (11-6) in the North Suburban Lake game.

Mary Striedl had 22 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals for Lake Forest. The Scouts also got 12 points from Gabby Perino and 11 from Annie Keller.
