Waukegan Y swimmers rewrite personal bests at Wisconsin Invitational

The journey was definitely the reward for the members of the Northern Lake YMCA Seahorse Swim Team who traveled to Brown Deer, Wis., on Dec. 9-11 for the 2011 Schroeder YMCA Finalist Invitational.

Tyler Howard led the team by breaking his own Boys 11-12 500-yard freestyle record, set last year in the same pool. With more than 600 swimmers participating at the meet, the small pack of 15 Seahorse swimmers made sure they stood out in their events.

"This was a great meet to be a coach because everyone came out of the pool smiling. Tyler had an outstanding 500 and all the swimmers broke at least one of their own personal time records for the year," Head Coach Mike Hewitt said. "We attend this meet because it puts our swimmers up against some of the top swimmers in the region and our kids used that opportunity to push their own boundaries."

The Seahorses next travel to the Belvidere YMCA on Jan. 8 to compete in the David Wolfe Invitational.

The Lake County Family YMCA swim program, which includes the Seahorse and Vernon Hills-based Turtles competitive teams, is well-rounded in that it also includes fundraising, volunteering and social responsibility development.

All Lake County Family YMCA programs are designed to encourage the four core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. For more information, visit www.ymcalakecounty.org.
