Advising sessions Jan. 12 for CE Pharmacy Technician, Dental Assistant
Continuing Education/Extended Learning at College of DuPage will host advising sessions for Pharmacy Technician, Dental Assistant and Veterinarian Assistant programs on Thursday, Jan. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Health and Science Center, Room 1219.
These free sessions will provide overviews of these programs, as well as information on the types of careers available for students who complete these programs.
A presentation regarding the Pharmacy Technician program will take place from 5 to 6 p.m.; Dental Assistant from 6 to 7 p.m. and Veterinarian Assistant from 7 to 8 p.m. These discussions will be led by representatives from the COD Continuing Education/Extended learning office and MK Education in Downers Grove, an instructional organization dedicated to the advancement of both pharmaceutical and allied health positions.
The Continuing Education Veterinarian Assistant program provides 90 hours of classroom instruction covering such topics as client relations, office and hospital procedures, animal nursing, surgical prep, and exam room procedures. In addition, students participate in a 30-hour, hands-on externship in a veterinarian's office/clinic or animal hospital/clinic. Duties of a veterinarian assistant include providing kennel care for animals, sterilizing lab and surgical equipment, and assisting with post-operative care.
The Continuing Education Dental Assistant program consists of 120 hours of classroom instruction covering such topics as dental office procedures, anesthesia and pain control,delivering dental care, and prosthodontics, with another 160 hours spent in a hands-on externship in a dental clinic or office. Dental assistant duties include sterilizing instruments, taking impressions, assisting dentist's chair-side, and keeping patient records and data.
The 105-hour Professional Pharmacy Technician program includes 75 hours of instruction in retail and institutional pharmacy practices, pharmacokinetics, drug class differentiation, basic physiology, drug interactions, and pharmacy law and ethics. Also included are 30 hours of instruction in pharmacy calculations, including math concepts, dosage calculations and measurement conversions. The Professional Pharmacy Technician program meets all requirements and prepares students for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (EXCPT) national certification exams.
