Fremd nets West triumph

Fremd’s girls basketball team opened up its season in the Mid-Suburban West with a 73-54 victory over Schaumburg.

Junior guard Ashley McConnell (3 3-pointers) led the Vikings (6-0, 1-0) with 23 points while freshman Haley Gorecki added 17.

Senior Jessi Wiedemann (2 3-point baskets) added 13 for the defending MSL champs.

Alyssa Saklak (20 points) and Amanda Kelly (12, 3 3-point baskets) led Schaumburg (2-5, 0-1).

“It was a great bounce back game for Ashley (McConnell),” said Fremd coach Dave Yates. “She had a tough game offensively against Hersey (8 points three days earlier) and she showed her true colors in this game.

“Schaumburg tried very hard to limit Jessi’s (Wiedemann) touches. And it was exciting to see Haley step up and help with the scoring.”

Sarah Macius and Marilyn Lortz each added 8 points for the winners.

“It was exciting to see our kids step up when our opponent tried to limit Jessi’s looks,” Yates added. “We got 60 points from our other players. This was a great team effort.”

Conant 43, Hoffman Estates 33: Senior Allie Bauch (14 points), freshman Katie Lomas (7) and sophomore Sarah Mazurek (7) were top scorers for Conant (3-6, 1-0) in its MSL West opener.

Destinee Young (13 points) and Mary Pettit (9) led Hoffman (1-5, 0-1).

Palatine 41, Barrington 30: Junior guard Nia Pappas (15 points) led Palatine (6-2) to the MSL West victory. McKenzie Wiedemann added 7 points for the Pirates.

Senior guard Nicole Collins paced Barrington (4-4, 0-1) with 10 points.

Christian Liberty 42, Morgan Park 39: Jess Moriarty led the chargers with 17 points and Jayan Rowland added 8.

Mother McAuley 47, Maine West 38: Junior Ashley Collins (9 points), senior Amanda Hoye (8 points) and sophomore Julie Huinker (8) led Maine West (1-6) in the Maine West Tip-Off Classic.

Hersey 73, Crane 68: Senior Jenn Hall scored a team-high 24 points for Hersey (3-3, 3-1) followed by Maggie Hogen (13 points), Corinne Busby (13), Meg Cernigila (11) and Renee Poulos (10).

Hogen also pulled down 8 rebounds while Busby had a team-high 7 assists.

Cerniglia was 5-of-5 from the field.

“We’ve been trying to get Meg to shoot more,” said Hersey coach Mary Fendley. “The game was like a track meet. There was a lot of transition baskets on both sides. The offense wasn’t set up too much.”
