Schaumburg prepared for SCE title shot
Schaumburg's boys basketball team has made a habit of big finishes with trips to the sectional finals the last two seasons.
This year the Saxons are off and flying to a hot start and a spot in the championship game of the Ron Johnson Tournament at St. Charles East. They improved to 3-0 with a 54-39 victory over East Aurora on Friday afternoon.
Christian Spandiary scored 13 points and Mike Mallet added 11 for the Saxons, who will meet Plainfield East (3-0) for the title at 7:45 p.m. today.
Fremd 52, Fenton 39: Adam Gorecki scored 18 points, Riley Glassman added 13 and Nate Serviss chipped in 8 points as Fremd finished Fenton's Chuck Mitchell Tournament at 3-1.
Play concludes in the five-team tourney today. South Elgin's 49-42 win over Lake Park gave both teams 2-1 records. Fremd lost 50-47 to Lake Park but beat South Elgin 29-24.
Fremd led Fenton 28-14 at halftime and 42-21 after three quarters.
Hersey 78, Kelly 34: Sean Reszotko scored 21 points and sophomore Mike Fuerst added 19 points as Hersey (1-2) cruised in the third round of the Billy Schnurr Tournament at Niles West.
Hersey tore out to a 23-2 lead after a quarter and led 34-13 at halftime.
Buffalo Grove 59, Christian Liberty 28: Junior Luke Potnick scored 13 points to lead a balanced attack for host Buffalo Grove (2-1) in its Bison Classic. Rich Zirngibl and Sam Wacker added 8 points apiece and Steve Soifer and John Mares-Coleman each scored 6 points.
Mike Hennek scored 11 points and Luke Comerouski added 8 points for Christian Liberty (1-2), which plays Elgin (3-0) at 6 p.m. today.
BG finishes tourney play at 7:30 p.m. today against Stevenson (2-1).
Niles North 66, Meadows 61: Malachi Nix scored 25 points to lead three Niles North (3-0) players in double figures while Brian Nelms (19 points) was the only scorer in double figures for Rolling Meadows (0-3).
Mike Olson and Tyler Gaedele scored 9 and 8 points as the Mustangs play for seventh place at noon against Palatine (0-3), a 75-45 loser to Waubonsie Valley. Niles North and Waubonsie play for the title at 5 p.m.
Maine S. 43, Maine W. 34: Conor Hart scored 16 points and Tom Kukec added 10 points and three 3s for Maine West (2-1) in the Warrior Classic loss in Des Plaines.
CL Central 63, Hoffman 47: Austin Terry scored a game-high 18 points for Hoffman Estates (1-1) in the Crystal Lake Central tourney loss.
