Hersey works OT for tourney victory

They may have to start charging a little extra when the Hersey and Mother McAuley girls basketball teams meet in the Maine West Tip-Off Classic.

For the third straight season, the Huskies and Mighty Macs settled the verdict in overtime.

And for the fourth straight year, Hersey was able to prevail over the private girls school from the south side of Chicago.

Senior guard Jen Hall led the Huskies (1-1) in their 44-43 tourney-opening victory with 17 points while Maggie Hogen added 12 and Corinne Busby 11.

Hogen also pulled down 18 rebounds. Hersey never led in regulation and never trailed in OT.

Prospect 67, St. Charles North 44: All-tourney selection Michele Molini (15 points, 3 3-pointers), Christina Brucci (14, 2 3-pointers), Taylor Will (10 points), Jessica Petrovski (9 points) and Adriane Falagario (8 points) led the Knights (3-2) in their final game of the first York tournament in Elmhurst.

"Our defense was much better," said Knights coach Martha Kelly. "We didn't foul as much and we limited our turnovers (13). We did a much better job taking care of the basketball."

Palatine 50, McHenry 26: Palatine (5-1) finished 4-1 and took second place in the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving tournament as junior guard Nia Pappas hit 2 3-pointers in each of the first three quarters to finish with 18 points.

Katelyn Mayer added 10 points while Katie Burke, Laura Schweikert and Monica Masini each added 6 for the Pirates.

St. Viator 42, Crystal Lake South 34: The Lions (3-2) were led on offense by Erin Fabbri (12 points) and Jennie Horstmann (10) in their final game of the Dundee-Crown tournament.

"Once again we had a terrific defensive team effort, led by Morgan Hess, Katie Gavin, and Erin Fabbri," said Lion coach Paul Bjerkness.

Fabbri collected 5 steals while Morgan Hess contributed 3 steals and pulled down a team-high 6 rebounds.

"We got a great lift off the bench from Jennie (Horstmann) and some huge shots on critical possessions," Bjerkness added. "And we got strong post play from Michelle Presslak and Justice Johnson.

It was a great team effort having survived foul trouble the whole game."

Neuqua Valley 54, Conant 44: Natalie Kutrumanes (14 points) and Allie Bauch (13) led Conant (1-5) in its final game of the York tourney.

Bauch, Sarah Mazurek and Katie Lomas each had 3-pointers for the Cougars.

Cary-Grove 42, Rolling Meadows 30: Sophomores Jackie Kemph (11 points) and Alexis Glasgow (10) led the Mustangs (2-3) in the final game of the first Turkey Thriller Tournament hosted by Lake Zurich, Fremd and Lakes high schools.

"We came to this tournament to play some of the top teams in the area," said Meadows coach Todd Hatfield. "We are a work in progress. Now we know what we've got to work and must fix those things. The girls have plenty of incentive to get after it in practice and try to clean things up for conference."

Stevenson 45, Maine West 33: Brittany Collins (16 points) and Amanda Hoye (8) were top scorers for the Warriors (0-2, 0-1) in their first game of the Tip-Off Classic.
