St. Viator nets triumph at D-C

Balanced scoring and stingy defense were the keys for St. Viator’s 45-30 triumph over Hampshire in the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament on Tuesday night.

Erin Fabbri and Mallory Hess each scored 10 points to the lead the Lions (2-2) while Lauren Rooney and Morgan Hess chipped in 6 apiece.

“We won the game with a simply outstanding defensive effort from Lauren Rooney and Morgan Hess,” said Lions coach Paul Bjerkness. “We also got strong minutes from Jennie Horstmann and Michelle Presslak.”

Katie Gavin chipped in 5 points for Viator.

“We did a terrific job of finding the open person,” Bjerkness added.

Harlan 50, Elk Grove 45: Sophomore Melissa Solorio and junior Diamond Boyd (11 rebounds) each scored 19 points for Elk Grove in a third-round game of the Elk Grove-Hoffman Estates-Lake Park tourney.

The Grens led 21-17 at intermission but Harlan used 5 3-pointers in the third quarter to pull ahead at the Lake Park West fieldhouse.

“They really started drilling 3-pointers,” said Grens coach Ryan Kirkorsky, who also got a big spark off the bench from 5-foot-4 junior guard Stephanie Solis.

“Diamond saw a lot of defensive attention but still played a great game,” Kirkorsky added.

The Grens (1-2) were without point guard Kelly Naughton (concussion) for the second straight game.

Kirkorsky is hopeful the 5-6 junior playmaker will return to action on Saturday when the Grens host Hoffman Estates in the tourney finale at 12:30 p.m.

Libertyville 47, Barrington 33: Senior guard Nicole Collins (2 3-pointers) and junior forward Maddie Bartz scored 9 points apiece to lead Barrington in the third-round game of the Bison Classic at Maine South High School in Park Ridge.

Senior forward K.D. Madden added 6 points with 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

Junior guard Ashley Heine added a 3-pointer for Barrington (2-2, 1-2), which faces Buffalo Grove (1-2) on Friday at 2 p.m. on the Bison floor.

The Fillies were hampered by 18 turnovers against the Wildcats.

“We gave them too many offensive opportunities,” said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. “We just had some bad decisions in passing. I thought our defense in the post did a real nice job. But we let (Alex) Haley (senior guard who scored 18 points) get away from us and gave her too many open looks.”

Neuqua Valley 54, Conant 44: Senior forward Natalie Kutrumanes (14 points) and senior guard Allie Bauch (13 points) led Conant (1-4, 1-3) in the fourth round of the York Turkey Tournament.

Bauch, sophomore guard Sarah Mazurek and freshman guard Katie Lomas each had 3 pointers for the Cougars.

St. Charles 52, Schaumburg 41: Junior guard Amanda Kelly tossed in a season-high 17 points with 3 3-pointers and teammate Alyssa Saklak added 7 for the Saxons (1-3) in their own Thanksgiving tourney.

York 65, Prospect 49: Prospect cut a 16-point deficit to 9 points in the second half before York held on to improve to 4-0 in its own Turkey Tournament in Elmhurst.

Michele Molini led the Knights (2-2) with 13 points, including 3 3 pointers while freshman Taylor Will added 12 points. Christina Brucci tossed in a 3-pointer.

The Dukes converted nine 3-point baskets, led by senior forward Megan Holmes (4).

“York shot the ball very well,” said Knights coach Martha Kelly. “We didn’t give up too many layups. Overall, I thought the girls’ effort was good. After we got to within 9 points, we just couldn’t close the gap any further. It was a good test for us.”
