ECC stages 'subUrbia' Nov. 4-20

Elgin Community College Theatre tackles the lives of idle suburban youths during “subUrbia,” the troupe's fall production that will be from Friday, Nov. 4, to Sunday, Nov. 20. Performances will be held in the ECC Visual and Performing Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, 11, and 18; Saturday, Nov. 5, 12, and 19; and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13 and 20.

Penned by actor and playwright Eric Bogosian, “subUrbia” examines a group of youths who hang out daily in front of a suburban convenience store, talk trash and reminisce about their glory days. Things change when their pop star friend Pony returns for a visit and the group's initial fascination with his success transforms into jealousy and anger.

Originally written and produced in 1994, this production aims to reflect current struggles many suburban young people face.

“The young people in this play are trying to figure out what to do with their lives and their options are shrinking just as the economic options for the suburban middle class are shrinking now.” said director, ECC Theater Professor Stephen Gray, Ph.D.

Tickets are $11 for adults and $9 for students and seniors. Tickets for all performances in the ECC Arts Center are available online at tickets.elgin.edu or at the ECC box office located in the arts center.
