MCC team catapults to success at Harper

Three McHenry County College students participated in the third annual Suburban Chicago Intercollegiate Catapult Contest at Harper College May 7.

The MCC team, which consisted of sisters Laura and Anna Gallagher of Union and Stuart Dwyer of Woodstock, finished first overall out of 13 teams, represented by Harper College, College of DuPage, and College of Lake County.

Engineering students designed and built their own catapults, which were entered into the contest. Competitions were held in the categories of distance, accuracy and precision. The three events are designed to accurately gauge the performance demands placed on the original siege machines of old. In addition to winning the overall championship, the MCC team finished first in the accuracy event.

“The team worked well together and it made all the difference before, during and after the competition,” said Laura Gallagher.
