Health, wellness summer courses offered at McHenry County College

Summer Continuing Education classes at McHenry County College include health and wellness offerings that can help you lighten and/or enlighten your mind and body. Offerings range from Aikido, laughter yoga and Reiki to sound immersion with Tibetan Singing Bowls. Offerings also are designed for a variety of ages and busy schedules.
These new classes are available in June.
Aikido For Seniors: Aikido is a martial art that offers a variety of benefits for all ages. This class is designed for people age 50 and older and will focus primarily on stretching to build and enhance flexibility, as well as learn basic body movement that can improve and strengthen both posture and balance. Class is offered from 10-11 a.m. Wednesdays, June 8-29 at the Japanese Culture Institute, 9225 Trinity Drive in Lake in the Hills. Cost is $39. Use course ID NHE S99 006 to register.Mental Health First Aid: Learn to recognize and assist someone that may be in the early stages of distress, developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Signs and symptoms of a variety of diagnosed mental health disorders will be covered as well as how you can most effectively respond in these situations. The class takes place from 8 a.m. to noon Fridays, June 10-24 in Room 116 at the Shah Center, 4100 W. Shamrock Lane in McHenry. Cost is $20, which includes the book for class. Use course ID NHE S95 006 when registering.Reiki Earth Healing Day: Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It#146;s administered by laying on hands and can be easily learned by anyone. Reiki Earth Healing Day is for Reiki practitioners of all levels and organizations. Many people have begun to participate in global healing practices. Bring a mat and pillow to sit on. Students meet in the MCC Cafeteria for start of class that takes place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 12. Cost is $15. Use course ID NHE S94 006 when registering.Humor Lights the Way: Learn and experience the healing power of laughter, joy and gratitude and feel it transform your life from the inside out. Learn to incorporate laughter into your daily life and #147;find the funny#148; especially during life#146;s most challenging times. You#146;ll also try some laughter yoga, which does not require a yoga mat. Class takes place from 7-8:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 22 in Room A102. Cost is $29. Use course ID NPL S40 006 when registering.Get a Life #8212; The Life You Really Want: Women manage multiple schedules and commitments like pros, trying to ensure that everyone in their lives is taken care of. Well, ladies, it#146;s time to take care of yourselves, too, and figure out what you really want, plus how to get it. Through questions, discussions and thought-provoking activities, they will cut through the confusion that leaves you feeling stuck and unfulfilled. This class will energize and empower you. #147;Get a Life#148; takes place from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 22 in Room A242 at MCC. Cost is $25. Use course ID NPL S36 006 when registering.Tibetan Singing Bowls-Ancient Instrument of Healing and Peace: Learn about the fascinating history of Tibetan Singing Bowls and why it is a tool for meditation, stress and pain relief, as well as for physical healing. Week I, you#146;ll be treated to a Sound Immersion, a totally receptive experience that will enfold you in the rich, resonant tones and healing vibrations of the bowls. Week II, you#146;ll learn how to play the bowls and create a Circle of Healing Sound. Class meets from 7-9 p.m. Fridays, July 15 and 22 at MCC in room B170. Cost is $69. Use course ID NHE S93 007 to register.Communication Through Improvisation: Discover the essential elements of improvisation and how to incorporate them into any group environment. You#146;ll learn the importance of listening, give-and-take, and living in the present moment. This class is offered from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 20 at MCC in Room A102. Cost is $29.
