Westminster rolls in regional opener

Ryan Perez had 3 hits and 2 RBI and allowed just 1 hit with 12 strikeouts in 4 innings of work Wednesday as the Westminster Christian baseball team rolled to a 10-0 win over Rickover Naval Academy in the semifinals of the Class 2A Westminster regional.

The Warriors, who won the Class 1A state championship last season, will take on the winner of today’s game between St. Edward and Northridge Prep in the 11 a.m. title game Saturday.

Andrew Mason was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Westminster while Kevin Elder also drove in 2 runs.

Dundee-Crown 3, CL Central 0: Mike Hazelhurst tossed a 3-hitter with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk to lead the Chargers (21-12, 17-7) to a Fox Valley Conference win. Corey Volberding (2-for-3, 2B, RBI) and Jake Romano (2B) led the D-C offense.

South Elgin 6, Bartlett 0: South Elgin set a school record for wins in a season behind a 1-hitter from sophomore Chris Bingham (2-0). John Menken, Jake Buhmann and Kenny Lowden each drove in 2 runs for the Storm (21-8, 16-8 Upstate Eight).

Burlington Central 2, Sycamore 0: Burlington Central, which turned a triple play during the game, got a solo home run from Blake Alexander in the top of the 10th inning to take the lead in this nonconference win. Sam Klein, who had 2 doubles for the Rockets (20-7), picked up the win in relief.

Jacobs 12, Grayslake North 11: Brett Kale was 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI and was the winning pitcher for the Golden Eagles (12-18, 10-3) in this Fox Valley Conference win. Eric Lonigro had a grand slam home run for Jacobs and Dillon O’Toole (2-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI) stroked the game-winning run in.

College baseball

Judson falls twice: Judson lost to King 8-3 and to The Master’s College 11-0 on the first day of the NCCAA World Series in Mason, Ohio. Ben Palmer suffered the loss against King and Nick Krisman was the losing pitcher against The Master’s. Judson has two more pool play games in the tournament today.
