Barrington springs sectional surprise
Barrington, seeded sixth in the girls water polo sectional it is hosting, provided the only upset of the day Wednesday in quarterfinal play.
The Fillies edged No. 3 seed St. Viator 7-6 in overtime to advance to a semifinal at 5:45 p.m. Friday against Schaumburg.
Lisa Danhauer led the way for Barrington (12-10) with 3 goals. Scoring once were Kayla Widdowson, Laura Widdowson, Chloe Padula and Catherine Byron; goalie Brooke Fanslow made 9 saves.
Eileen Mallof had 2 goals for St. Viator (17-12).
Schaumburg 8, Hoffman Estates 7: Ashley Johnson, Sammy Schuckles and Angie Fee each scored twice to help the second-seeded Saxons (17-7) narrowly avert an upset to the No. 7 seed Hawks.
Sharon Sturnfield, Rachel Gallo and Dorota Knaga all had 2 goals for Hoffman Estates (10-18).
Fremd 19, Rolling Meadows 5: Emily McCarthy scored 4 goals and Lauren Zambelli, Samantha Matuszewski, Taylor Spoonholz and Megan Kennedy each had 2 to help the top-seeded Vikings (22-4) advance to Friday’s 4:30 p.m. sectional semifinal against Hersey.
Emily LeBuhn scored 4 goals for Rolling Meadows (7-16).
Hersey 13, Conant 10: Huskies senior Christine Rovani had a game-best 7 goals as Hersey (19-10) advanced to the semifinals. Katelyn Derrig and Maura Kelly both scored twice for the Huskies.
Conant (17-14) was led by Katie Varga with 3 goals and Jessie Southern and Gina Iaffaldano with 2 each.
Vernon Hills sectional
Top-seeded Mundelein defeated Buffalo Grove 9-4 and will meet Vernon Hills, a 10-8 winner against Libertyville, in Friday’s 4:30 p.m. semifinal. The Bison got 2 goals from Sarah Fasching. In other games, Stevenson rolled past Deerfield 18-1 and Wheeling topped Lake Forest 7-4; the Patriots (23-8) and Wildcats (14-11) will meet in Friday’s 5:45 p.m. semi.
Glenbrook North sectional
Prospect 17, Glenbrook North 7: The fourth-seeded Knights produced a dominant effort to advance to semifinal play at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Meg Dix led the way for Prospect (21-3) with 5 goals, and Jessica Cavaiani and Tori Shields had 3 apiece.
Prospect next face top seed Loyola, which trounced Maine East 17-3.
