Buffalo Grove comeback stuns Rolling Meadows
Buffalo Grove made its finest comeback of the season and broke a four-game losing streak in Mid-Suburban League softball Friday at Rolling Meadows.
Coach Jamie Paul’s visiting Bison were down 9-0 after three innings but pulled out a 12-9 triumph by scoring 3 runs in the top of the eighth inning.
Down to its last strike, BG (11-1, 4-7) tied the game at 9-9 in the top of the seventh when sophomore Amanda Salzman delivered a two-out RBI single.
Sophomore Megan Fu (2-0) held the Mustangs (13-10, 6-5) scoreless over the final five innings and got the win as the Bison scored 3 runs in the top of the eighth.
Emily Begnel had an RBI single and Erin Barton a 2-run single in the decisive inning.
Barton (3-for-5) belted 2 homers while Andrea DiPrima (2-for-4) had 1 homer and a double. KC Dunne (3-for-5) also doubled for the winners.
Leading hitters for Meadows were Sam Anderson (2-for-4), Josie Suchecki (2-for-5), Natalie Cannizzo (2-for-5) and Emily Hattory (2-for-5).
Starter Sara Brunlieb, Kayla Mueller and Suchecki all pitched for Meadows.
Elk Grove 5, Prospect 2: Mid-Suburban East leader Elk Grove (19-3, 10-1) scored 3 runs in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie in Mt. Prospect.
Carly Danek’s RBI single made it 3-2 before Krista Soesbe added a 2-run single.
Dani Goranson (18-3) went the final 1 innings, striking out three for the win. Starter Andrea Starr went the first 5 innings, giving up 4 hits and striking out four.
Senior Kristen Cetkovic went 3-for-4 for EG while junior Megan Keegan was 2-for-4.
The Knights (4-17, 1-10) scored twice in the sixth when Nicole Naranjo singled sharply to center to score Mary Styzek and Michele Molini.
Hanna Lythberg went the first 3 innings for Prospect and Liberty finished the game.
Conant 13, Hoffman Estates 1: Visiting Conant (18-1, 9-1) had seven players with 2 hits as Briana Cavin (16-1) hurled a 5-hitter with 5 strikeouts.
Cavin (2-for-4), Rachel O’Malley (2-for-4) and Miranda Cavin each had doubles while teammates Allie Bauch, Kim Jacobson, Sarah Thompson, Paige Ward and Sara Pawlik also had 2 hits apiece.
Junior Alex Tuminaro went 2-for-2 for Hoffman (5-16-1, 2-7).
Hersey 5, Wheeling 4: Mallory Eichhorn (2-for-3, double, RBI), Angela Schmiederer (double, RBI), Haley Henriksen 1-for-3, RBI), Melissa Cecala (double), Alex Tinaglia (2-for-3) and Sarah Platt (double, RBI) were top hitters for visiting Hersey (5-14, 3-7).
Platt threw the first 6 innings with 6 strikeouts while Morgan Palmer (2 strikeouts) pitched the seventh, getting the final out with runners on second and third.
Sophomore Sara Kern went 4-for-4 with a triple for Wheeling (4-11, 0-9) and teammate Alyson Fallon was 2-for-3.
Taylor Schroeder and Sejal Shah each had sacrifice flies for the Wildcats while Katie Quagliano and Amanda Zamatta also had RBI.
Fremd 10, Schaumburg 6: Fremd (19-2-1, 8-2) led 10-2 going into the seventh inning at Schaumburg (11-7, 5-5) as sophomore Ashlynne Schwantz (10-1) went the first six innings for the win.
Allie Gaeding (3-for-5), Mandi Matsumoto (2-for-4), Michelle Mazur (2-for-5, 2 doubles), Megan Horn (2-for-5), Megan Hubbard (2-for-3, home run), Caitlin Patenaude (2-for-3, double) and Sara Untiedt (2-for-4, double) led the Vikings.
Alexis Carravetta (2-for-4, RBI), Brianne Lingl (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Alyssa Lancaster: (1-for-2, home run, 2 RBI), Jessica Cook (pinch-hit single) and Renee Kakareka (pinch-hit in the seventh) were hitting leaders for Schaumburg.
Maine West 13, Taft 1: Junior Katie Fitzgerald (8 RBI) went 4-for-4 with a 3-run homer, 3-run double and 2-run single for host Maine West (13-7) in the nonconfenece game.
Holly Wengerski (2-for-2, 2 runs), Brie Montmarquette (2-for-2) and Angela Cruz (double) were other offensive leaders for coach Mike Murin’s squad, which received a 2-hitter from sophomore Ariel Valles (12-6).
Leyden 11, Willowbrook 1 (5 inn.): Morgan Maize (2-for-3, home run, 3 RBI), Bri Michels (2-for-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) and Amanda Moran (2-for-2, 2 RBI) led Leyden, which is 17-3 and 5-2 in the West Suburban Gold.
Maize (16-2) gave up 1 hit and struck out six in 4 innings.
