May 20 open house for home-schooled students at CLC

On May 20, home-schooled students and their families are invited to attend an open house from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, May 20 in room T326, at the College of Lake County Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St.

The open house will include a campus tour and information from college staff from admissions, advising, testing and more. Families can learn about CLC's acceptance of home-school credentials, how to make a successful transition from home schooling to college workload and ways to fit in and make friends with other students. Formerly home-schooled CLC students will also be present answer questions. Light refreshments will be available.

In fall 2010, when the college began asking new students to self-identify if they were home schooled, 29 students reported that they had been home schooled. According to the Lake County Regional Office of Education, there are 53 families registered in Lake County as home schooling families. It is not a state requirement for home school students to register with the state.

Meredith Amburn of CLC Enrollment Services works with the home school population, and a new webpage for home school students will be online soon.

CLC's new student trustee, Nathan Wegbreit, of Wadsworth, is a 16-year-old who is dual-enrolled as a CLC student and a home schooled high school student. He has a CLC 4.0 grade point average and is active in student life, including serving as a Student Government Association senator, as secretary/treasurer of the World Politics Organization and as a participant in the 2010-2011 Emerging Leaders program.

Like other students, home-schooled students are eligible to apply for the Honors Program with tuition-free classes and to participate in services offered by the counseling, advising and transfer center; writing and math centers; and peer mentors.

Other campus life activities include more than 40 student clubs, including academic teams, speech team and Phi Theta Kappa honor society; performance opportunities in music, theatre and dance; 11 intercollegiate sports and study-abroad programs (from three weeks to a whole semester).

According to CLC Honors Program Scholar Andrew Metzger of Lake Villa, “The transition from home schooling to CLC was simple. With smaller class sizes, I was able to get to know the other students and the professors well. For home-schooled students especially, CLC provides an easier transition to a four-year school by allowing you to take transferable credits while still at home.”
