Baseball / Lake County roundup

The Antioch and Grant baseball teams engaged in a high-scoring game for the second day in a row Wednesday.

Antioch won again.

Paul DeJong and Joe Gregory homered, and Brett Prather knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth, as the Sequoits pulled out the North Suburban Prairie Division game 9-8.

Antioch (12-5, 5-1) got 3 hits apiece from DeJong, Gregory (double) and Dave Meade (double, RBI). Prather had 2 hits, and Greg Licht pitched 2 innings in relief of Bob Pranke to earn the win.

Grant was paced by Jordan Villarreal, who went 4-for-5 with a solo homer, and Tyler Gorski, who was 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Nick Fanella had a double and 3 RBI.

The Bulldogs had taken an 8-6 lead in the top of the eighth, before the Sequoits rallied.

Vernon Hills 16, Round Lake 2: The Cougars’ bats picked up where they left off Tuesday against Round Lake, scoring all of their runs in the first three innings.

MJ Crowley (2-for-3, RBI), Chris Marras (2-for-3, double, triple, 2 RBI), Austin Hagen (1-for-2, triple, sacrifice fly) and Brian Palmer (triple) led the way. Freshman Pat Crowley made the start and earned the win to improve to 5-0. Crowley was supported by excellent defense by right fielder Austin Miller. Chris Argianas and Anthony Mazza turned another double play to help the cause.

Round Lake got a double from Anthony Gutierrez.

Stevenson 4, New Trier 0: Dalsen Ferbert pitched 6 innings, scattering 5 hits, striking out seven and walking one in the nonconference game.

Michael Martin went 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBI, and Max Golembo (2 RBI) and Ricky Kern also were 2-for-3 for Stevenson (16-2).

Lake Zurich 5, Warren 2: Parker Asmann hit a 2-run triple and scored the go-ahead run, as the Bears rallied for all of their runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the North Suburban Lake Division game.

Mike Lutz went the distance on the mound for Lake Zurich (6-13, 1-5), allowing 1 earned run and 4 hits while striking out eight and walking a pair.

“We finally put all three phases of the game together, especially at the plate,” Lake Zurich coach Gary Simon said.

Jake LaRue and Zach Till started Lake Zurich’s sixth-inning rally with base hits.

Lakes 17, North Chicago 3: Chris DeRue picked up the win for the Eagles, who improved to 11-8 overall and 4-1 in the North Suburban Prairie.

Grayslake Central 12, Woodstock 4: Jon Gurchak had a triple, 2 singles and 3 RBI, as the Rams cruised in the Fox Valley Conference game.

Nick Hosford, Ryan Hamrick and Austin Leggett each had 2 hits for Grayslake Central (14-8), with Hosford scoring 4 runs. Mark Ash chipped in a double.

Derek Idstein and Mike Wiggins combined on mound duties, with Idstein pitching 5 innings for the win.
