Maine West breaks through late
Maine West was not having much luck making contact through 5 innings against hard-throwing Hersey right-hander Joe Perricone in Saturday’s nonconference baseball game.
A pair of strikeouts to start the top of the sixth put Perricone at 13 as Hersey held a tense 1-run lead. But Maine West quickly put together a string of solid at-bats and scored 3 runs en route to a 3-2 victory in Arlington Heights.
A single by Mike Farias got the Warriors’ rally started and Paul Solka followed with a walk. James Duckman (2-for-3) hit a go-ahead 2-run double to center field.
Perricone came out and Tom Kukec delivered an RBI single off reliever Aaron DeGeorge. Dylan Reinke got the victory even though he didn’t have a strikeout in 6 innings.
Nick Litman came in with runners at first and second and got Maine West’s only strikeout for the save.
Hersey (7-6) scored in the first inning on a double by Tyler Perkowitz and an RBI single by Trevor Haas (2-for-4). Mike Danielak had an RBI groundout in the sixth.
Leyden, Downers Grove South split: The Eagles (13-1, 7-1) won the opener 1-0 behind a no-hitter from Eric Palmer (3-0).John Marino provided the game-winning RBI double in third inning.
The Eagles suffered their first loss in Game 2 when they fell 6-5.
Palatine 8, Rockford Boylan 7: Jim Smearman went 2-for-3 with a 2-run homer and 3 RBI and David Schalla saved the nonconference win for Palatine (10-7) with two scoreless innings.
Scott Schneberger (triple, 2 RBI), Cody Bobbit (RBI), Jesse Bobbit, Dan Haze and Mike Czarnik all had 2 hits as Palatine won for the ninth time in 11 games. Eric Scheuermann (2-2) went the first 5 innings for the victory.
Hoffman sweeps Mather: Freshman Ethan Bloom had 2 hits in each game as Hoffman Estates (5-9) rolled to a pair of 5-inning wins, 14-2 and 15-2.
Mark Roberts had 3 hits and Kevin Tednes and Trent Rehusch had 2 hits for winner Jimmy Ward in the opener. Ward also had 2 hits in the second game as Brian Cvitkovich got the victory.
Barrington splits triangular: Mike Weisshappel threw a 3-hitter with 3 walks and 8 strikeouts as Barrington (2-14) beat Jones 3-1 in the final game of its triangular at Kirby Smith Field.
Weisshappel left runners at second and third with a game-ending strikeout. Barrington scored runs in the first two innings but didn#146;t get its first hit until Doug Beath#146;s one-out single in the fifth. Macray Poidomani and Jack Scheffler had back-to-back doubles in the sixth.
Barrington lost the opener 15-6 to New Trier despite a pair of 2-run homers by Scheffler, who went 3-for-3. Poidomani and Ricky Alfonso had 2 hits apiece.
New Trier (9-4) beat Jones 9-4 in the other game.
Glenbrook South 15, Prospect 3: Prospect (11-3) had a 12-11 hit advantage but five went for extra bases for Glenbrook South (12-3) in the six-inning win at Larry Pohlman Field. Jack Landwehr went 3-for-4 with a double and Brad Coffman went 2-for-3 for the Knights.
Stevenson 16, Meadows 10: Rolling Meadows (6-6) was clinging to a 5-4 lead when Stevenson (11-2) scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Pat McGinn homered and had 3 RBI and Kevin Cwynar and Matt Hendricks each had 2 RBI for the Mustangs.
Huntley 6, St. Viator 4: Brian Wilhite went 2-for-3 for St. Viator (7-8) in the nonconference loss.
Glenbrook North 10, Fremd 7: Host Fremd (6-7) had a 3-game winning streak snapped by the Spartans (14-1).
