Elgin string quartet to perform
Daily Herald report
On Sunday, April 17, the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra Maud Powell String Quartet will perform with the Beloit College Chamber Singers at 3:30 p.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church, 1105 Catalpa Lane, Naperville.
There will be a reception at 4:30 p.m. for audience members to interact with the performers.
The Beloit College Chamber Singers, conducted by Susan Rice, is an advanced choral ensemble drawn by audition from the ranks of the entire student body. Although they pursue a variety of academic majors and minors, members engage in an active application of music theory to their a cappella repertoire through the use of tuning forks as a learning tool.
The Maud Powell String Quartet is the premiere string quartet of the EYSO Chamber Music Institute, selected by competitive audition in June, and offered on full scholarship.
The quartet works with regular coach Matthew Agnew, principal cellist with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, and guest coaches such as Rachel Barton Pine, Charlie Pikler, Isabella Lippi, Roland Vamos, Jaime Laredo and members of the Pacifica Quartet.
Now in its fourth season, the Maud Powell String Quartet is made possible by the generosity of EYSO patrons Ed and Joyce McFarland Dlugopolski.
Maud Powell (1867-1920) grew up in Aurora, Ill., and was the first American female violinist of true international renown, premiering the Dvorak and Sibelius violin concertos in America, touring with the Sousa band and making the first solo recordings for RCA Victor.
The Maud Powell String Quartet is just one of the many unique opportunities made available to student musicians by the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra. The EYSO has five orchestras, a Brass Choir and three honors ensembles.
