EYSO ensembles to perform

On Sunday, April 10, the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra Chamber Music Institute, with Director David Anderson, presents several chamber ensembles performing throughout the day.

Four performances are scheduled: 1, 2:15, 3:30 and 4:45 p.m. at the ATC Auditorium at Elgin Community College, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

“Playing chamber music teaches great musicianship,” Anderson said. “In a chamber music setting, each member of the ensemble is both soloist and team member at the same time. It teaches vital listening skills and provides invaluable ensemble and musicianship experience.”

The Chamber Music concerts are just one great experience of many provided to EYSO students. EYSO musicians perform world-renowned music in many different venues and settings, including state of Illinois Capitol in Springfield, Ravinia, Park West and Scotland’s Aberdeen International Youth Arts Festival.

April 10 also is the annual EYSO open house. Attendees can visit rehearsals, watch CMI performances and learn more about upcoming auditions for the 2011-12 season. Two free tickets to one of the final performances of the 35th anniversary season will also be given to those who attend the open house.

Students who will be performing come from towns around the Chicago area, including Algonquin, Arlington Heights, Aurora, Barrington, Barrington Hills, Bartlett, Batavia, Bridgeview. Campton Hills, Carol Stream, Carpentersville, Cary, Chicago, Crystal Lake, East Dundee, Elburn, Elgin, Elk Grove Village, Elmhurst, Frankfort, Geneva, Gilberts, Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Hampshire, Hanover Park, Hinsdale, Hoffman Estates, Huntley, Inverness, Lafox, Lake Zurich, Libertyville, Lombard, Maple Park, Medinah, Minooka, Montgomery, Mt. Prospect, Naperville, North Aurora, Oswego, Pingree Grove, Plainfield, Roselle, Schaumburg, Sleepy Hollow, South Barrington, South Elgin, Spring Grove, St. Charles, Streamwood, Sugar Grove, Sycamore, Warrenville, Wayne, West Chicago, West Dundee, Wheaton, Winfield and Yorkville.

Auditions will be June 1-5. Students who will begin fourth grade in the fall to college students can audition for a seat in one of the six ensembles. Applications and audition requirements may be found at www.eyso.org or by calling (847) 841-7700.

The EYSO regular season includes six concert performances at the Blizzard Theatre on the main campus of ECC. In addition, the Chamber Music Institute performs each semester, the Brass Choir performs with a professional brass ensemble every spring, and the EYSO honors chamber ensembles — the Maud Powell String Quartet, the Hanson String Quartet, and the Sterling Brass Quintet — perform at various venues throughout the year.

EYSO is committed to making participation accessible to any qualified student regardless of financial need. Students have opportunities each year to earn part or all of their EYSO tuition.

Since the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra is an In-Residence Ensemble at the Elgin Community College Arts Center, EYSO members who are 16 years of age at the beginning of a semester are eligible to earn some college credit while playing in the EYSO.
