Kevin Staszczak had a big start to his third varsity season Thursday.

The Grayslake North senior infielder went 3-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBI, as the Knights defeated visiting Grant 16-1 in their season opener.

C.J. Bailey was 2-for-3 with 4 RBI for Grayslake North. Tom Elias pitched 3 innings of 4-hit ball to earn the win. Kyle Fosco threw the final 2 frames for the save.

Grant (0-2) got a double from Brandon Weber.

Vernon Hills 0, Waukegan 0: The nonconference game was suspended due to darkness after six innings.

Vernon Hills received a quality start from sophomore Tyler Feece. He was supported defensively by Anthony Mazza and Chris Argianas, who combined to turn 4 double plays.

Feece was knocked out of the game after getting hit by a line drive to end the fourth inning.

Ryan Lane pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief. Vernon Hills threatened in the bottom

of the sixth, as Argianas led the inning off with a walk. Mazza singled him to second base, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Argianas was gunned down at the plate as the third baseman made a nice play on a ball hit by Chris Marras.

Brian Palmer then battled to draw a walk and load the bases. But Waukegan got a strikeout and flyout to center.
